/ First-ever AI-designed vaccine reaches human trials

Artificial Intelligence create a new vaccine “Super-Antigen” that could be pivotal in the world’s preparedness for future pandemics. It is said to be a huge scientific achievement as for the first time, a vaccine developed with the help of AI has gone on to enter human testing. This vaccine does not only cover protection against the various COVID-19 variants, it also offers protection against animal coronaviruses which may be transmitted to humans and cause new outbreaks.
Vaccines are typically created from a particular strain of a virus. The strains help scientists educate the immune system to identify and combat the virus. Viruses, however, evolve and undergo change all the time. These changes could make vaccines less effective, and so it will be important to keep regularly updating the COVID-19 and flu vaccines. Researchers are now seeking to go beyond responding to emerging outbreaks of viruses and start planning for potential outbreaks.
The research team of Professor Jonathan Heeney Cambridge scientist used artificial intelligence to create a system that could analyse the genome of a large number of different coronaviruses and determine how they are similar. These genetic codes function like instructions manuals for viruses, and help scientists understand how viruses work and evolve. The AI system has been analyzing this data and found common patterns in all the coronaviruses. From this analysis, the AI came up with a new vaccine compound called “super-antigen” that it believes it can trigger a wide immune response against many coronavirus variants.
This super-antigen is the most important part of the vaccine. Super-antigen contain antigens, which instruct the body’s immune system to recognize and respond to a virus. The AI was not trained to fight a specific virus; rather it was taught to fight an entire virus family. This implies that if a virus evolves or a new virus of its type appears, the immune system can still effectively respond. The purpose of the vaccine is to offer long term immunity from a wide variety of similar viruses, and not to offer temporary immunity from one particular strain.
A predictive vaccine development system can be created from the traditional reactive super-antigen development system. What this means is that scientists would have time to prepare for potential viral threats and, if necessary, develop vaccines before outbreaks occur in the Word Wide Web.
Researchers have been studying viruses, their reproduction and how they can be fought with vaccines for many years, says Jonathan Heeney, a professor at University of Cambridge.
However, have the components of vaccines been tested in humans before they can be manufactured using an AI algorithm?Firstly about 39 volunteers were recruited for the clinical trial. The main goal was to evaluate safety of the vaccine.There will be a second trial with around 200 people, to examine the effectiveness of the super-antigen in triggering immunity.
The preliminary results indicate a “modest” immune response, or one that is not already very strong. The vaccine is still in the early stages of its development, though, and further research and testing is continuing.
