When the first time, a song that you’ve listened to a thousand times earlier sounds different, you know your headphones are more than just an accessory. They’re instruments. That moment hit, when I was testing both the AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2 back to back: same playlist, same seat but completely different experience.

The Pro 3 is tight and punchy, so you can immerse yourself in the music as it slams into your ear, while the Max 2 is wide and breathtaking and can be enjoyed as if it were playing in a concert hall wrapped around your head. It’s not a matter of which one sounds good. They both do. The question is, which one is right for you?

Sound Quality: Two Excellent Philosophies

AirPods Pro 3: Big Sound in a Tiny Package

The Pro 3 signature sound has significantly improved from the Pro 2. The internal acoustic design was completely redesigned. The new multiport configuration features better air flow control that results in more pronounced bass and articulate vocals compared to the product in the ear canal. Put on a hip-hop song and the low end hits actual weight on them. Use an acoustic set that emphasizes vocals and each note is clear and bright.

The H2 chip serves to do a lot of work here. The custom built driver or amplifier combination is integrated with the chip’s control to maintain distortion at an impressively low level, even at high volume levels. The Pro 3 doesn’t get muddy when listening to piano or jazz, which is a style that reveals distortion in no time.

There’s also Adaptive EQ. It will determine the compatibility of the buds in your particular ears and will adjust the audio in real time. Within minutes, the sound begins to feel personally tuned to your ears, because it is.

What stood out in use: ANC on max while I was commuting and jamming out on heavy bass tunes, was the only thing that was important. This was total isolation and very focused and controlled music.

AirPods Max 2: Reference-Class Listening

The Max 2 is in a league of its own. There’s plenty of room for the big 40mm Apple-made dynamic drivers and that space is reflected in the sound. Wide and three dimensional soundstage, instruments don’t sound at you, they sound around you. Strings feel real. There is air around the drums.

This headline spec is Lossless Audio via USB-C, which means they work with a supported app and the difference is noticeably audible. Compressed streaming sounds fine, lossless source material through the Max 2 sounds like what the artists hear in the studio. That’s important when it comes to listening sessions at home or in a studio environment.

The soft over ear design also plays a role. With physical earcup isolation, there’s first a passive noise blocker and then the active ANC.

What was missing: Headphones are the most lifelike they’ve been for a while after using them on a well-mastered album via USB-C lossless. Spatial Audio and head tracking brought an element of depth to the experience making it cinematic.

Active Noise Cancellation: Pro 3 Wins for Commuters

The AirPods Pro 3 is now the world’s best in-ear ANC, blocking 2x more noise than the Pro 2. The new ultra quiet microphones, combined with a newly designed acoustic seal featuring foam filled ear tips, are an impressive combination in eliminating ambient sound, which is quite a remarkable level from an in-the-ear microphone.

While the AirPods Max 2 are an upgrade to the original AirPods Max (up to 1.5x better) and the Max 2 is still not on par with the AirPods Pro 3 in terms of ANC performance alone. In a noisy setting, however, that Passive isolation offered by the over ear seal the Pro 3 can’t match means that the Max 2’s actual blocking remains strong.

If you use the subway, have an open office or fly somewhere: Pro 3 is the clear winner. But if you are looking for a quiet home listening setup, where you want immersion over blocking, then Max 2 is there for you.

They both have Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness, which will adjust the volume when you start speaking with nearby people, and then increase it once you’re finished. They’re both good for use in a normal day-to-day situation.

Battery Life: No Contest

The AirPods Max 2 is an absolute winner here. With 20 hours of listening time on a single charge, these are truly all-day (and then some) pairs of headphones with ANC on. A five minute charge provides playback of about 1.5 hours, which can come in handy in an emergency.

The Pro 3 offers up to 8 hours of battery life on ANC on, still a good in-ear time (2 hours more than the Pro 2). Battery life gets improved with the MagSafe case. So, when you are on a long flight or a full day-out without charging access, the stamina of Max 2 is hard to ignore.

Design, Fit and Usability

The Pro 3’s ear tips were completely redesigned, with a new XXS size included in 5 sizes that is rotated inward for a better fit. They remain in during exercise. IP57 rating is the one which implies that rain and sweat are not an issue at all. It’s not just audio equipment, as these are fitted with heart rate monitoring features during the exercises.

The Max 2 weighs 386g. That’s noticeable. For a concentrated listening session, on a desk or couch, perfect. After taking a 2-hour stroll around the city, your neck knows about it. The Smart Case offers better protection to the ear cups, but it is larger and heavier to transport than a charging pod.

There are a lot of variance in controls: the Pro 3 has touch-sensitive stems (squeeze to pause/skip, swipe for volume adjustments). Controlled by a Digital Crown (seen before on Apple Watch) which rotates for volume control, the Max 2 features the same satisfying accuracy as the previous iPhone and Watch examples, plus a dedicated Noise Control button.

Who Should Buy Which?

Get the AirPods Pro 3 ($249) if:

  • You need ANC when you’re on the go while commuting, exercising, or travelling.
  • Portability is important, they don’t have to consider it at all.
  • You need heart rate monitoring and IP57 waterproofing.
  • By purchasing the products, you’re entering Apple’s hearing health system
  • The budget is a true constraint

Get the AirPods Max 2 ($549) if:

  • You are a serious listener of music who cares more about audio quality than anything else.
  • You are at a desk or home setup and do not need to worry about weight.
  • Lossless Audio via USB-C is important to you
  • Non-negotiable battery life (20 hours).
  • The widest, most immersive soundstage Apple can produce.

The Bottom Line

These two are not competitive, they serve different needs, because they are $300 apart. The AirPods Pro 3 is Apple’s most complete daily earbud: it has excellent ANC, really great audio, smart fitness capabilities, and a cost that doesn’t warrant reconsidering the budget. The AirPods Max 2 is for those who take a seat to listen, those who value a well mastered record, who enjoy what it sounds like when it gets the treatment it deserves.

If you were able to have just one pair? Most will find the Pro 3 to be the more handy, versatile option. However, if you’ve ever turned the lights off and lost your way in an album, then Max 2 is the best pairing option.
