Amazon’s flagship speaker has long served listeners with high-end audio that doesn’t compromise on the ability to access Alexa, but this new iteration appears to be more of a complete redesign than just another incremental update. Weeks after the use, from background music on work days to watching movies on Fire TV and controlling everything smart home, we know that Amazon has gotten much further with the idea.
The new spherical design seamlessly fits into a room, and Alexa+ makes for more intelligent conversations, keeping track of what was said in earlier questions. That said, it is the most ambitious Echo Amazon has created yet, so it’s hard to say if it’s the best smart speaker on the market.

The first thing to pop into your mind upon arrival of the new box is that it’s quite a bit smaller than what came earlier. The original was a high cylindrical tower which stood out on any level. But this one is an orb, a small, snugly wrapped-in-fabric sphere that measures 6.1 x 5.6 x 5.8 inches and weighs 3.6 lbs. It’s very close in style to the Echo Dot Max and more like the Apple HomePod mini than anything that Amazon has ever built.
Acoustic fabric wrapping is of high quality. The volume controls are located at the front, in a concave panel. The ring of LEDs flashes blue when Alexa+ is on. Amazon has made a few minor tweaks to this control panel, which are minor but smart improvements, making it feel more natural to reach down and tap on. For those who like to wall mount it, there’s also a screw mount on the reverse side.
First, let’s get the most critical question out of the way: How does this thing sound? After being passed through Kendrick Lamar, classical playlists, and podcasts, a straight answer is very good, but different from what longtime Echo Studio fans would have hoped for.
The three 1.5″ full-range drivers have exceptional clarity at delivering the mids and highs. The vocals are clear and refined. The spatial audio really does work on the Dolby Atmos tracks in Amazon Music, instruments don’t feel like just playing from a single point in space, they are placed in the room. The soundstage is very broad for such a small speaker.
When it goes back, it’s bass. The 2025 model features a 3.75 inch woofer, while the first gen was equipped with a 5.25 inch woofer. The low end is there and it is controlled, it just doesn’t thump like the original. Heavy bass tracks like EDM trap, hip-hop sound clean and refined. The bass is clean but not impactful. For pop, jazz, classical music and podcasts, the performance is more than satisfying. But, if deep and heavy bass is your main priority, this is a compromise worth considering.
The room calibration feature adapts the room setting in the background and after the initial setup it did feel tailored rather than generic. Built-in DTS:X support gives an extra layer of compatibility.
The Echo Studio 2025 is built around Alexa+ and it reflects this. The new addition of the AI processor makes it much faster to use than previous Echo models. Commands are executed almost instantly. What really impresses me is the conversational skills of Alexa+. Instead of answering single instructions, it is able to answer follow up questions naturally. I asked Alexa to play something relaxing, then tell it to turn it down a little, but play a little more piano. It understood exactly what I asked for.
Amazon still has a clear advantage with smart home control. With built in Zigbee, Matter support and Thread Border Router functionality means that the Echo Studio 2025 can serve as a hub for a variety of smart home devices without any need of a separate hub. The presence detection sensor is also quite helpful and can sense the presence of a person in the room and start building routines, as opposed to a normal motion sensor, which is less sensitive.
It also has an inbuilt temperature sensor for use as a data point in your smart home automations. These are not the kinds of features you see in headlines but for those who are constructing a fully smart home setup, they save them from having to have an extra device in their home.
The 2025 Echo Studio’s headliner is its support for select Fire TV devices to form an immersive Dolby Atmos home theater setup, including the Fire TV Stick 4K and 4K Max(2nd gen) and Fire TV Cube (3rd gen). On paper, the idea is convincing. You can pair multiple Echo studios and a subwoofer to create a powerful wireless system.
I even tried the Echo Studio 2025 along with a compatible Fire TV to experience its performance within a home theater system. It was easy to pair and once paired, audio playback was stable and synced. I did see a slight delay during the initial connection but not while using it.
I like the flexibility of this feature. For those already using a Fire TV device, the Echo Studio can be more than just a streaming music player, it can become a wireless home theater system with Dolby Atmos support. I did a few tests for normal movies and TV, although not a full multi speaker setup, but it was promising and it’s really just an added bonus to the speaker’s already impressive music performance.
The stereo setup was actually what got me to be amazed by running two Echo Studios together, albeit with some conflict. It took a few attempts to get them paired up with the Alexa app. At first the sound didn’t feel right, a second setup fixed it. After I got it, the gap was true. The music stopped feeling like it was coming from a speaker pair but felt like it was filling the room. The left and right channels were well separated and the vocals were in the middle where they belong.
The switch to Fire TV for a movie night found that dialogue were more grounded and action sequences had actual directionality to them. It won’t replace a dedicated home theater but for a wireless stereo setup at this price, the performance is genuinely impressive. A single Echo Studio sounds impressive but pairing two together transform the whole listening experience.
At $219.99, the Echo Studio 2025 sits alongside the Sonos Era 100 in terms of price. The Sonos Era 100 is a purer sounding audio speaker, with tighter bass, more crisp mids, a more audio friendly tuning. When it comes to quality, Sonos takes the win. However, the Echo Studio hits back with a full fledged smart home hub, a smarter AI assistant, and much more seamless integration with Amazon’s ecosystem than Sonos can offer.
Against the Apple HomePod (2nd gen), which sits higher in price, the HomePod has better overall audio fidelity and tighter bass response. But if you’re not all-in on Apple’s ecosystem, the HomePod’s smart home limitations become frustrating quickly. The Echo Studio beats it on smart home breadth by a wide margin.
If you’ve wondered if Amazon discontinued the Echo Studio, the answer is: no. Amazon has indeed stepped up its game, making the 2025 model its flagship smart speaker and the top in a slimmer, more focused range of Echo speakers.

The Amazon Echo Studio 2025 is the best smart speaker that Amazon has ever created but it just depends on what you’re looking for. This is the best choice if you’re looking for a truly smart AI assistant, the most capable smart home hub integrated into a speaker at this price and clean, balanced sound with good vocal clarity and great spatial effects. It’s smaller in size, easier to install, less obtrusive in a living room and Alexa+ delivers much better than the standard Alexa.
The caveats are true: the bass is not as heavy as the original, there’s no optical input, and the home theater capabilities of the Fire TV are still rolling out. The upgrade isn’t the obvious improvement if your primary use of the original Echo has been to its low end for its deep, room-filling resonance.
