Anthropic’s Claude AI is having yet another bad morning. Reports about issues with Claude began to emerge on August 24 as users started experiencing failures in requests and slow responses, along with problems with several features of Anthropic’s AI-based products.
This time, the outage isn’t localized to either a specific Claude model or a certain feature. Anthropic reports elevated errors that affect several models and claims that it has already found the reason behind the errors and works on resolving the problem. But so far, there is no timeline for when all the issues will be sorted out. (Android Authority)
In this case, we are not talking about a simple glitch. Claude has become an essential tool for developers, companies, writers, and regular users via such tools as Claude Code and the Claude API. Hence, when multiple features of the platform break at the same time, the consequences of the outage may go beyond the inability to open a chatbot.
As reported by Android Authority, user problems began to emerge around midnight ET on August 24, growing in number as the morning proceeded. As it could be seen from Downdetector and posts on X, users started experiencing problems with Claude in bigger numbers.
Anthropic officially acknowledged the problem at 5:06 UTC calling it “elevated errors” affecting several Claude models.
The company initially reported that it was investigating the problem with Claude Mythos 5, Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 5, and Claude Opus 4.8. However, after around 20 minutes, Anthropic announced that it had found the reason behind the errors and was fixing them.
What is important here is that Claude isn’t necessarily completely inaccessible to everyone. It is more about the elevated failure rate which means that some requests would work properly while others would not.
It may be particularly irritating for the users when the platform becomes problematic when used for coding.
One of the most worrying aspects of the current outage is its wide scale.
User reports and outage monitors demonstrate that there are multiple problems with different services that belong to Anthropic’s ecosystem, namely Claude.ai, Claude Code, the Claude API, and Claude CoWork.
Anthropic has tried to position Claude Code as a development tool rather than just another interface of a chatbot. The platform is capable of working directly with developers’ code, which means that its outage may interfere with the development process rather than just delay the completion of an AI task.
The same goes for the API. Companies and developers that build their apps using Claude may be using Anthropic’s infrastructure without using claude.ai at all.
Hence, when there are problems with multiple services at the same time, the issue becomes an infrastructure problem for those who have built their workflows using Claude.
Anthropic claimed that it had identified the cause of the elevated errors, but so far it hasn’t disclosed it at the time of writing.
It is an important fact considering the fact that the affected models come from different generations and services. Therefore, this problem doesn’t seem like an isolated model problem.
Right now, Anthropic’s status page contains an unresolved problem titled “Elevated errors for multiple models”. (Claude Status)
For the users, it means that there is nothing to do apart from waiting for Anthropic’s infrastructure team to sort out the problem.
Moreover, there is no information that this problem is associated with the violation of the security or user data breaches. Based on the available information, it seems like this is a problem of elevated errors in service reliability.
The current timing makes this incident more interesting.
In August, there were several outages in Claude, namely the outage on August 16 which has affected authentication and led to degraded performance of multiple services of Anthropic. On August 18, another multi-model outage was reported.
On August 12, Anthropic reported elevated errors in multiple Claude models and degraded performance of such services as claude.ai, API, Claude Code, and Claude CoWork. Eventually, it has been sorted out.
None of these incidents mean that Claude is unreliable. Large AI platforms operate big infrastructure and temporary outages are an inevitable fact.
However, repeated problems raise the question of how much users are ready to rely on a single AI platform for their important jobs.
This is becoming increasingly relevant as AI moves from an assistant to part of the software stack.
Developers who use Claude Code constantly during the workday may not have the opportunity to wait until it becomes operational again. A company using Claude API may have clients who need Claude’s response in real-time.
If Claude fails for you, the first thing to do is to check the official status page of Anthropic rather than trying to refresh the app.
In case the problem is with Anthropic, uninstalling the app, clearing the browser cache, or switching the device won’t help.
Developers using the Claude API should also think about temporarily redirecting their critical workloads to another AI model if their applications allow them to do so.
Ordinary users have not much to do locally in terms of fixing the issue. The outage happens on the side of Anthropic, and according to Anthropic’s announcement, its engineers are already fixing the problem.
Third-party outage monitoring services show that the number of reports started to decline later in the morning, which suggests that the availability may improve with Anthropic deploying its fix. However, users should only rely on Anthropic’s status page for getting a recovery signal.
The fact that Claude is down is not the story. The fact that Claude keeps going down is.
Right now, it seems like the current outage is another infrastructure problem rather than a catastrophic failure, and Anthropic has already found the reason behind it. It is quite promising.
But the warning here is for people who start treating one AI platform as a mission-critical infrastructure.
Claude is powerful. Claude Code is useful. Anthropic’s models can be integrated into real workflows. But the current outage is another reminder that AI redundancy is necessary.
If your work comes to a stop the minute Claude stops responding, then you don’t have AI workflows, you have a single point of failure.
Don’t panic, but don’t rely on Claude alone. Anthropic needs to get the current incident under control, and more importantly, prove that these increasingly common disruptions aren’t the price of relying on one of the most popular AI platforms.
