/ Apple launches iOS 27 public beta with smarter AI features.

Apple has launched the iOS 27 public beta program on 13th of July for millions of iPhone users to get their first interaction with the company’s next big software overhaul, before its official release in September. In addition to iOS 27, Apple has released beta versions of the upcoming iOS versions including iPadOS 27, watchOS 27 and macOS 27 with a host of new features, user interface updates and greater integration of artificial intelligence across its offerings.
The public beta is not a developer beta, as they were earlier made for testing purposes. It is rather meant for the general public who wants to be among the first to see the new software of Apple. It is still considered by Apple as an unfinished product and the user may have problems related to the software, including bugs, battery drain, etc.
Joining the iOS Public Beta is straightforward. Navigate to beta.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID and navigate to Settings, go to General then Software Update, Beta Updates and enable the iOS 27 Public Beta or iPadOS 27 Public Beta option. On Mac users, the same can be achieved by enabling macOS 27 beta in System Settings, go to General then Software Update. If this does not appear immediately, a restart will normally work.
Early testers won’t be getting a watered down preview, as today’s public build is so similar to the third developer beta without developer accounts, which was released on July 6.
The most prominent change across all platforms is the reworked Siri, which is now known as Siri AI. This is Apple’s most ambitious effort to date to get in on the conversational AI game and it shows. The new Siri can perform searches on the web, dig through photos, emails, messages and other personal data, view content on the screen and take actions within and across apps. A significant improvement over the previous version, which was more of an assistant driven by commands, it’s reported to behave much more like some of the new generation of chatbots, such as Claude or ChatGPT, than the previous versions of Siri.
In iOS, Siri AI now has its own app for ongoing, back and forth conversations, with new controls for changing the speed and expression of Siri’s voice in Settings, go to Siri then Voice, which also apply to spoken results in Maps and Safari. Siri is now a part of Spotlight on Mac, accessed with Command + Space and can now understand what you see on the screen with the first ever inclusion of Visual Intelligence with macOS.
There are a few limitations for now to keep in mind. However, at first, the Siri AI will be available only with specific English accents, not available immediately in the European Union, and will need an Apple Intelligence-enabled device. Some of the more advanced on device features are reserved for the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air.
AI isn’t the only reason to care here. The performance aspect is a significant part of iOS 27’s pitch. Apps can now open up to 30% faster, AirDrop can transfer up to 80% faster and new photos can show up in the Photos application up to 70% faster than ever before. The gains are said to extend from the iPhone 11 all the way back to the most recent hardware, as a result of a rebuilt CPU scheduler. Whether it’s unlocking the phone, navigating through the Control Centre or changing Lock Screen views, everything feels smoother.
Apple Intelligence is also taking flight elsewhere. Safari will automatically organize opened tabs by topic, group bookmarks and Reading List items and bring back recently closed tabs on the Start Page. The new Notify Me feature is helpful to monitor a webpage for any changes. Photos adds three new features for editing images using AI: extending images and cleaning them up. Spotlight, Photos and Mail have also had a facelift with search now showing up to five best search results for a query in Mail.
This year’s biggest changes to Screen Time include a new dashboard that provides a much clearer window for parents on a child’s device activity and enhanced child safety and parental control features.
For the Mac version, Golden Gate provides a polished version of the Liquid Glass design from last year, with a new slider that lets you set how transparent the interface looks system wide and more uniform toolbars, as well as a less aggressive rounded window corner.
The first public beta release seems to have landed on time, as Apple has been doing with iOS 16 to iOS 18 since last year, on July 24 and Apple has its official release tentatively scheduled for September, expected alongside with this year’s new iPhone lineup. There will be several more beta releases between now and then, each with a few more bugs worked out before a release candidate in the fall that comes closer to Apple’s keynote.
As in all beta software, Apple does warn that the software may be unstable and shouldn’t be used on a primary device. When in doubt about Siri AI or the performance boost, a later beta or the stable version can be a safer choice, even if you aren’t interested in it now, you might be later on.
Apple’s iOS 27’s public beta brings genuine substance more than hype. Siri AI is Apple’s biggest leaps at the assistant in more than ten years, and even in beta already, it’s much more powerful and capable than its predecessors, though with a limited language and regional option selection to begin with, naturally. Combine that with the real speed boosts of even older iPhone generations and this looks like it will become one of the most important iOS releases in some time. If you are the sort who is always anxious to drive the future, you can sign up right now and wait for September.
