Every year if someone asks me: “Should I wait for a new MacBook?” I mostly give the same answer that it totally depends “where are you coming from?” When Apple Launched the MacBook M5 Air on March 3rd, 2026. I might give the same answer this year again but when I started using it, I loved it.
The box includes, MacBook Air M5 (13” or 15”), 30W USB-C Power Adapter, 35W Dual USB-C Port Compact Power Adapter and a USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable (2m). This laptop does not try to impress you at first. It doesn’t have to. It simply does everything a lot quicker than you expected and then the battery does not run out. Here is a story of MacBook Air M5 and that is more compelling than its spec sheet.
Design and Build Quality:
Apple did not change the design. The MacBook Air M5 comes with the same aluminum shell Apple launched with the M2 a few years ago in 2022. Four color choices include Sky Blue, Midnight, Starlight, Silver. When you are upgrading on an M4, you will not make any heads in the coffee shop. But Apple took some meaningful action in its making.
The M5 introduces a 10-core CPU and up to a 10-core graphical processing unit, and includes a feature known as a Neural Accelerator integrated in every GPU core. That part is important for AI heavy tasks. Apple claims that the M5 is 4x faster on AI workloads than the M4 and in practice, Apple Intelligence features, image processing, on-device ML tasks, and similar tasks are definitely perceived as faster.
Then there’s the storage situation. Apple has also eventually increased the minimum amount of storage to 512GB, double the amount that previous models were sold with. That price increase of $100 ($999 to $1099) hurts, but having 512GB standard makes it a bit easy to bear.
The other upgrade that will really alter your everyday life is Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 by Apple’s N1 wireless chip. A Wi-Fi 7 router will not be available to most people but when you finally get one (which I’m sure you will) this laptop is there.

Performance:
I have multiple browsing tabs, writing programs, photo editing, and the occasional video exports. On M5 Air, switching between Photoshop, a 20-tab browser and a Zoom call has no lag, not a half-second stutter, not a spinning beach ball. Apps are activated immediately. My M5 does not react when switching between heavy apps: Photoshop to Final Cut to Safari.
Even the fan-less design is a two-edged sword. This was also validated in testing by Toms Hardware, M5 performs well under heavy load CPU usage but levels off as temperatures increase. The Neural Accelerator is what makes on-device AI actually fast.
To all other users, students, remote workers, writers, photographers, developers doing everyday builds, you will never reach that height.
A single figure that Apple quietly reduced in the official specs that should give more focus is 153GB of unified memory bandwidth, a solid 28% increase over the M4. That is what makes multitasking so easy. The jump between a Photoshop file that is heavy, a browser with 20 tabs, and a Slack call does not lag. The memory is not only faster in theory but you can feel it in the beat of the way of working. And the SSD? Apple claims that it has 2x faster read/writes than the last generation.
Apple says it is 6.9x in Topaz Video AI compared to M. I believe it. In Blender, with ray tracing, it is 1.5x faster than the M4 to render 3D. Affinity Image Processing? Also 1.5x faster. They are not jaw dropping jumps across M4, but they are steady over the board of work and they accumulate over a full working day.
It is ten seconds faster on a GarageBand export, but not enough to notice during a session. InZoi was tested on the Air at 4055 FPS on low settings with ray tracing off by the Toms Hardware gaming-review site, stating that it is not a gaming laptop but can be used in casual play.
This is a significant step up, so as long as you are on either M1, M2, M3 or M4? Being truthful, you are all right, keep your money.
The question is not the speed of M5. It’s whether it is fast enough for what you do. And for 90% of people reading this. It absolutely is.
Battery:
Apple’s 18 hours battery claims sound like marketing. Until you actually test it on your own.
Macworld ran their standard battery test, Video looping continuously, display locked at 150 nits and the results? 18 hours and 24 minutes. Meanwhile CNN Underscored measured 16 hours and 38 minutes in their test, which they reported as 14% longer than the M4 took to complete the same test. Moments like this are rare in this tech world and this one is mesmerizing to me.
I completed whole working days (writing, browsing, video calls, a bit of image editing) with half or a quarter battery remaining. That is a lifestyle change to a person who used to be battery anxious, enough to make it their second profession.
A photographer who wrote in The Frames claimed to average a strike of about 13 hours in actual editing sessions in Capture One and Luminar Neo, not video looping.
The fast charging option is also quite efficient, 50 percent of charge within about 30 minutes with a 70W or faster charger. When you are in a hurry to go out, that half-charge will last you most of a working day.
When was the last time you took a full work trip, did you ever care about battery life? You may even find yourself not thinking about it at all with the M5 Air.

Display:
I will tell you the truth of the matter. I was not expecting the display to impress me. I have been using MacBooks for a long time. But the Liquid Retina with 500 nits display and the ability to support a billion colors still sends me into a state of shock when I open a well-edited image or load a color-graded video clip. The text is now clear that I no longer have to increase the font size in my writing programs. That is important following an eight hour working session.
It would always be the 15-inch that I would choose. Weighing 1.51 kg it does not beat up your bag, and the additional screen space alters your work habits. Two windows are open at once without straining your eyes, reference images with your editing window. The 13 inch at 1.23 kg is the better travelling companion, no doubt. But when you are at your desk most of the time, mostly to the cafes then to the meetings, then go for 15”.
It is precisely the keyboard feel, which I desire: responsive, quiet, consistent. The best trackpad I ever had on any laptop is on this one, and I have used a lot of them. The upgrade I never thought I needed but then I no longer looked terrible when I was on video calls is the 12MP Center Stage camera.
My only real gripe: two Thunderbolt 4 ports remain inadequate in case you are using peripherals. Most days I have a monitor, an external drive, and a USB hub. MagSafe has a charging management that assists, yet in case you are a multi-peripheral individual, you must invest in a dock. And when you are inclined to Midnight, it is gorgeous. But an hour will see it covered in fingerprints. Its low-maintenance options are Sky Blue or Starlight.
This laptop is designed to allow individuals to work and not to fiddle with the system. When you are in it only gets out of the way.

macOS:
The hardware gets the headlines, but the software, this laptop comes with macOS Tahoe deserves a mention.
Liquid Glass design that brings a visually refreshing effect by Apple allows you to customize folders, app icons and even widgets with color options. It is cosmetic and to be fair some of it actually is. But the real story lies in the Apple Intelligence upgrades below.
Live Translation in Messages implies that you can chat in any language without having to leave the app, which is truly helpful when you have to deal with foreign clients or colleagues.
Reminders now automatically categorize your most important tasks. And Shortcuts can access directly into Apple Intelligence models, meaning you can create automations, such as extracting important information in a PDF and directly dropping it into a spreadsheet.
Next comes the iPhone’s Mirroring feature. Now you can see Live Activities on your Mac, and be able to act on them there, without reaching to your phone. And a new Edge Light effect on video calls provides a soft fill light to even out your face in dim lighting. Small things. However, in the wake of many years of appearing in Zoom like a cellar-dwelling ghost, I enjoy it.
The hardware and software that operate so closely together is the sort of thing that is difficult to place a spec number on, but having used it, returning to it is like a downgrade.

Final Words:
I’ve been using it for around three months and still haven’t once reached for a panic. That’s the real review. The M5 Air doesn’t try to win you over at the unboxing, it wins you over quietly, on a Tuesday afternoon, when you realize your laptop has been running since morning and still has 40% left.
One detail that does not receive enough attention: Apple has built this laptop using 55% recycled materials, 100% recycled aluminum in the body and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery. It is produced using 50 per cent renewable energy throughout the supply chain. It makes a difference whether you are concerned about the source of your tech.
It has two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and a MagSafe 3 charging port. When you have to use several peripherals such as external monitor, drive and other accessories at the same time then it is more or less mandatory to purchase a USB hub or dock.
MacBook Air M5 fully supports AI features. M5 chip features a 16 core Neural Engine and Neural Accelerator on each GPU core, and is 4x faster on AI workloads than M4. Such functions as Live Translation, Apple Intelligence-based Shortcuts automation, and on-device ML tasks are much faster on this machine.
Photo editing, light video exports, audio production. It makes all things run smoothly. It is 1.9 times faster than M4 in video enhancement in AI. Under sustained load, however, the fanless design implies the throttling at long, heavy rendering sessions, so bear that in mind.
