Introduction
All gaming monitor guides follow the same pattern: a block of text copied from a spec sheet, some briefing about immersive curves and a recommendation they have to make the same. We have read them, too, and we were tired of it before we began this one.
We thus did something different. We purchased and borrowed five monitors, from the budget 1080p all the way up to the 34 inch OLED ultrawide and spent the time in real games and not just a spec sheet comparison. What we saw here 3 hours into a ranked match or when we walked past the desk at 2pm and the light hit the screen in an unexpected way.
We’ll explain when OLED isn’t the best option for you, which refresh rate numbers to avoid and which that you will notice, and which of these five monitors we would tell you to avoid if you have a particular setup.
How We Tested
Same test benches: RTX 4070 Ti Super, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, same HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort cables on each panel for eliminating cable variance.
Real game time, not a lap around a menu: dozens of hours per monitor in a competitive shooter, an open world RPG, and a race simulator but then you have the hours you spend during the day as you browse, write and spreadsheets.
Measured, Not assumed: the brightness and black level were measured, and the input lag was verified using a high-speed camera and on-screen timer, not relying on marketing data.
Real world testing, No dark laboratories: it was all real rooms, tested with the lights on and off with a lamp.
The minimum of two weeks per monitor, so that the daily quirks could be seen, such as fan noise, firmware nag, stand wobble, etc.

Buying Guide
Panel Types
The most important spec on the sheet is the panel technology. TN panels are fast and cheap but they wash out at an angle, which we didn’t cover here, and are becoming harder to recommend in 2026. IPS (the MSI, LG, and ASUS in this series) provides a more accurate color and large viewing angles with only average black levels. VA (the Samsung) offers deeper blacks than IPS but with some motion blur in dark scenes. The Acer, in addition to delivering true blacks and instant pixel response, has the downside of being susceptible to burn-in if static information is left on screen for hours a day, albeit not as much as the older OLED versions, and with meaningfully reduced risk with modern versions of the routines. Mini-OLED is an option which provides a higher level of local dimming than IPS/VA but not the same as OLED, although we didn’t use any mini-LED in our five test units.
Refresh Rate
The 60Hz to 144Hz change is the one that will make a difference in the gameplay’s feel. 144Hz to 240Hz is real but less pronounced and is only significant when playing competitively at a level where reaction time is the difference. In our testing, the returns were difficult to feel beyond 240Hz, unless the GPU can keep up at that rate. Worth noting: Manufacturers specify the response time usually 1ms under ideal conditions but in our head to head comparison, the two monitors that were both rated 1ms had varying real world motion clarity, so the number is a best case scenario, not a guarantee.
Resolution
1080p remains viable for purist competitive gamers who are trying to get the most frames per second from a low-end graphics card. For most consumers who are purchasing these days, 1440p is the sweet spot, it is more detailed than 1080p but doesn’t require the most expensive graphics card. 4K and ultrawide resolutions look incredible but they do require some serious GPU power and with curved ultrawides, a minimum of 26 to 30 inches of desk depth to be far enough back to prevent the curve from becoming distorted at the edges.
GPU Matching
1080p/1440p, 144–180Hz: Most competitive games are more than happy to get the grunt from an RTX 4060 or RTX 4060 Ti class GPU, which are capable of comfortably reaching 1080p/1440p with refresh rates of 1080–1440Hz, depending on the game.
1440p, 240Hz+: (LG UltraGear) if you want to shoot at 240fps, upgrade to an RTX 4070 or above.
4K or ultrawide OLED: (Acer Nitro ED340CUR, MSI MAG 276CXF at 4K) RTX 4070 Ti Super or higher or you’ll spend more time tweaking your upscaler settings than enjoying the resolution.
HDR
The lower tier of certification is HDR400 and in our experience, it doesn’t look different from SDR, with the Samsung being one such exception. The true blacks and the higher peak brightness level of the Acer’s OLED panel was the only place that real HDR impact was visible, making the display look like a game would look in true HDR. If HDR is important, ignore the certification logo and towards the underlying panel technology.
VRR
Variable Refresh Rate: FreeSync or G-Sync Compatible keeps the screen’s refresh rate in sync with the output of the GPU, reducing frame rate fluctuation. During the tests, the LG UltraGear had the best ability to tolerate a sudden drop in the frame rate, while the Samsung experienced some minor flickering during deep dips. That’s also not to mention that input lag is not the same as VRR smoothness. Input lag is the time between pressing a button and seeing it on screen. VRR smoothness is how fast a pixel changes color, something in the monitor’s internal processes can cause lag for which we used a high speed camera, not the spec sheet.
MSI MAG 276CXF was locked into the panel with one single captive screw, which should be a standard part of the panel and VESA mounting took less than two minutes to achieve when we followed that method. It’s a minor detail, but it was the starting point for everything that was good after that it was the monitor that never made us work for a good experience.
Over the past couple of weeks, we spent about 40 hours on it and it maintained its frame rate in the most intense moments of gameplay without any smearing effect. After 15 hours of Baldur’s Gate 3 on the same screen, that was a different story. It doesn’t have OLED level blacks, but its dungeon scenes were still pretty deep for a non-OLED screen. Colors out of the box were nice and bright, yet not over bright, and the curve didn’t seem like a gimmick after a day of regular use.

Who should buy it: For those who want a single screen for all their needs, spreadsheets in the day, ranked games at night but don’t want to pay an OLED price for it.
Quick Verdict: We selected this one to see if a medium range curved monitor could sidestep the typical performance or usability compromise and after three weeks, it’s the best of this bunch for the spreadsheets as well as ranked matches.
Bottom Line: This is the monitor we’d recommend as the go to if you’re looking for one that does everything well. Only skip if contrast and black levels are more important to you than round-the-clock versatility.
The blacks of Acer Nitro ED340CUR were not only black but they weren’t there at all. It’s hard to explain until you’ve it in front of you. For the next two weeks, we spent almost 35 hours on that one game over the following two weeks, most of which was done at night and a lot of which was looking for that same effect.
We didn’t take Acer’s words for granted, and to answer the two questions that everyone has in mind when considering an OLED gaming monitor, we tested the burn-in and fake HDR capabilities. But on the HDR front, the neon lit scenes in Cyberpunk’s urban environments really did bring some zip to those blacks, not the washed out versions we’ve seen on lesser HDR IPS screens that might be just as capable of displaying the same certification badge.
We intentionally put it under stress during the burn-in period: static taskbar, Discord overlaid for hours, and some 20 hours of Civilization VI with a mostly stable UI. At the end of our test period, we didn’t see any noticeable retention, thanks to the built-in pixel-shifting routines of Acer, but that’s a beginning, not a promise of no years of heavy static use. Text clarity, a more problematic aspect for OLED platforms in normal day to day use, was surprisingly good over the dozen or so articles we produced straight on this panel.
The 34 inch curved display with the UWQHD resolution is precisely the display size where it stops being a gimmick and starts becoming the ultimate play and work station where you can see the full picture without turning your head thanks to the width of the screen. 0.03ms response time was more than just a specification on paper as it allowed Cyberpunk games to stay free from smearing despite how intense the battle could be. The HDR True Black 400 standard is what we finally saw delivering on its promise.

Who should buy it? Dedicated game and movie players, someone who wants to get into the game, who appreciates immersion over anything else and is willing to learn some prudent habits with OLED.
Quick Verdict: We were looking for an OLED in this lineup to see if the hype about HDR really matched the actual experience of using it, and this is the one that shows HDR for what it is, at least it’s the most immersive screen we’ve tested and not just a badge on the box.
Bottom line: This is a worthwhile upgrade if immersion and images are your top considerations. Avoid if you use the computer for hours of passive content each day and if you aren’t willing to accept any long term retention risk, the MSI will be the better choice here.

After 15 hours in Apex Legends with LG UltraGear over two weeks, I was able to see how little there was to notice. Motion was kept clean even in the worst team fights and with no smearing in fast horizontal pans and input lag was low enough to not be noticed when pitted against a dedicated esports monitor that we had used in the past. On the VRR side, ten hours of Forza Horizon was about the same, although frame rates varied, they were handled without the stuttering and shattering of the less expensive VRR implementations when they get a sudden drop.
The only place this monitor slowed us down was in the menu. Switching a few options, such as overdrive level or a crosshair overlay, required meandering through submenus that are not in line with the fast and simple claim the panel makes in other places. The PS5 and Series X handshakes the console full band-width without signal drop, which is a nice change from some of the console ready monitors in the past.
While the 240Hz ceiling sounds impressive, it was really the 1ms response time that paired up with the 240Hz that allowed me to enjoy crisp gaming in Apex Legends and not just blurry images. Both of these factors are only good when working together. However, while at 1440p the refresh rate is really possible to reach with a good enough GPU, it may not be as easy for monitors that promise 240Hz at higher resolutions. Finally, HDMI 2.1 proved itself to work well on consoles by providing full bandwidth on PS5 and Series X.

We’ll be honest about Samsung Odyssey G51F, it is indeed a trade-off and nobody will do you a favor by fooling yourself about that. Even right out of the box it wasn’t the flattest of these three panels, but after taking about 10 minutes of tweaking the colors setting, it looked like it was pretty competitive for the price.
The upgrade to 120Hz was so noticeable after just 30 hours over 14 days of playing Overwatch 2, it’s not really that significant of an update. We also took a whirl for about 8 hours at a more leisurely pace in a single player mode to see how it would fare at noncompetitive play speeds and as with the expensive panels here, colors remain more or less acceptable but not up to the same standard.
The165Hz refresh rate is where this display gets its value, which is well above the mark where people who use 60Hz will be able to see the difference, without going after a 240Hz refresh rate that is beyond the capabilities of the GPU tier that comes with it. The VA panel was precisely what made colors seem dull before calibration, since VA panels normally require more calibration than IPS panels do in order to get the best out of their colors.

Who should buy it: It’s for anyone who purchases their initial serious gaming monitor who expects decent frame rates and does not want to pay double the price and is okay with spending 10 minutes in the color menu.

Even before we powered it on, we could tell that the stand was significantly sturdier than any of the other monitors on this list and we found no wobble despite a very hard push of the desk. It was that first impression and that was the end of the story. The device is silent in doing its job and it never calls attention to itself.
Twenty hours in Forza Horizon proved how truly fluid of motion the game is, decent, though a little flatter on the outside on some of the quicker moments during the race compared to the LG which wasn’t quite so smooth in the same moments side by side. The rest of our time with it was normal in every sense. roughly 15 hours of evening writing, browsing and a small amount of Stardew Valley and no firmware nag, flickers, or signs of stand sag throughout the entire time.
The 165Hz refresh rate and flat IPS panel is a smart, downplayed pairing and it’s the idea, this isn’t a 240Hz panel that’s being marketed as a spec-sheet headline, it’s a 165Hz IPS panel that will function at that refresh rate consistently without the expensive and fragile 240Hz panel. The flat 27 inch format is also the most versatile of the five with regards to awkward desk configurations (no curve to align with your sitting position). A stable, no drama, no drops signal connection every time with HDMI 2.1, just as expected here.
