The Dell XPS line has always had a niche in the top of the range of ultra-portable models. Its sleek CNC machined aluminum chassis and minimalist aesthetics have consistently impressed but the previous architectural generations often frustrated power users with thermal throttling, capacitive touch function rows and poor battery life.

Dell promises a huge correction course with its launch of the Dell XPS 14 (2026) DA14260. The laptop’s new 3nm “Panther Lake” Core Ultra Series 3 architecture is powered by Intel’s new architecture and it has very powerful Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) display mechanics, specifically in the target market of matching or improving on the efficiency of Apple silicon while retaining the sleek luxury of a Windows flagship.

This is a deep dive, empirical review that gets past the marketing jargon to provide a long-term user point of view, backed up with hard numbers, synthetic data and physical measurement.

I’ll admit, I came into this one cautiously. After the controversial capacitive controls and Dell’s short lived “Dell Premium” rebrand in 2025, it felt like the XPS identity had lost its way. The return of a real trackpad, a function row and Intel’s all-new Panther Lake silicon gave me reason to be hopeful but I wanted a real life experience with it before making any statement.

Build Quality and Design: It Finally Feels Like a MacBook Rival Again

What you notice right away when you pick up the 2026 XPS 14 is that it’s unusually light. The OLED version weighs 3.0 lbs, almost a pound lighter than the 2024 XPS 14, which weighs 3.7 lbs. For the chassis, Dell has returned to CNC-machined aluminum, while the palm rest features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and the OLED cover glass features Gorilla Glass Victus. The rounded corners and lower profile are a clear homage to the MacBook Air style and I’m not complaining.

The controversial capacitive buttons row from the 2024 generation has been discontinued. Physical function keys are now back. Although the key travel is still shallow at about 1 mm, it has a much greater tactile feedback than the capacitive bar ever did. The trackpad now features a lightly etched border, so that the edges of the trackpad can be clearly felt without having to look down at it. These are small fixes but a game changer. Over a six week period I didn’t think about any input devices at all, that’s exactly what you want.

Build materials too have a sustainability story to tell: Top and bottom covers are 75% recycled aluminum, battery is 50% recycled cobalt and keycaps are 90% recycled steel and the box ships in 100% recycled or renewable packaging.

Display: The Tandem OLED Is Exceptional, the LCD Is Respectable

The OLED panel on mine is 2880×1800 with adaptive refresh rate of 20-120Hz and a 400 nits rated peak brightness (HDR). I did some testing with a calibrated colorimeter and found that the OLED had an SDR brightness level of around 440 nits and effectively infinite contrast as the OLED pixels turn off individually. Colors are saturated and true, with 100% sRGB coverage and about 99% DCI-P3, this panel is firmly in the realm of the “creative professional”.

For comparison, Tom’s Hardware took the base model 2K LCD version and measured it at 466 nits (which is actually brighter than the OLED in raw SDR terms). The LCD achieved 434.6 nits under Trusted Reviews‘ testing and a 1950:1 contrast ratio of 1950:1. It also covers 99% of the sRGB color gamut. The LCD also goes into a 1 Hz refresh mode with static information, which is a true power saver.

The OLED’s shiny coating has a downside. Indoors, colors pop and HDR content on YouTube and Netflix is absolutely stunning. Reflections are distracting outside. The display will be usable in the shade but will not perform as well in the direct sunlight during the day at 400 nits. For those who work outside a lot, the LCD version will offer you a little more brightness and matte surface, which is a more logical choice.

Performance: Panther Lake Delivers Where It Counts

Intel Core Ultra X7 358H is manufactured on the 18A process node and, according to Intel, has 16 cores (6 performance, 8 efficiency and 2 low-power efficiency cores) and a maximum boost clock of 4.8 GHz. It also has a new graphics card with Intel’s Arc B390 GPU, a major upgrade from the previous XPS models that featured Intel’s integrated graphics.

It means smooth 4K video editing timelines in DaVinci Resolve, speedy performance with 25+ Chrome tabs open, Slack and Spotify playing and surprisingly playable frame rates in lighter games. On the native OLED resolution, I managed to run Hades II at about 45 fps while running it at 1080p at about 60 fps.

The 7467 MT/s 32 GB of LPDDR5x RAM never failed to be enough for me. I didn’t experience a single swap-to-disk stutter while browsing in Lightroom Classic with 42-megapixel RAW files.

Battery Life: This Is the Headline

The XPS 14 truly impressed me with its battery life. A combination of the 70Whr 3cell and Panther Lake’s efficiency is a match made in heaven for Windows laptops.

The VRR is really better off on more dynamic content, as a web browsing figure with VRR enabled, dropping the panel to 1Hz on static pages is really too high to be believed. I used Google Docs, Slack, play streaming on Spotify, sometimes Lightroom editing, screen brightness around 50% and the battery life was always 13-15 hours on a single charge. That is definitely a full day of work and a commute.

The provided 100W USB-C charger charges the battery from 10% to 80% in around 45 minutes of my testing. Minor Problem is the charger brick and cable are a bit large and bulky in relation to the laptop. I kept the original charger at my desk and used a third party charger with 100W GaN for traveling.

Audio: A Genuine Surprise

This quad-speaker system consists of two 3W woofers and two 2W tweeters for a total of 10W peak output, the best I have heard on a 14 inch Windows laptop. The Dolby Atmos spatial tuning brings genuine width. I listened to an entire album at around 70% with no distortion whatsoever in my 12×14 foot home office. The vocals are clear, the mids are detailed and there is actual perceptible bass but obviously nothing like the low-end thump of even a basic Bluetooth speaker. The dual-mic array with Intelligo processing picked up audio with clarity during video calls and I was heard clearly by colleagues on Zoom.

Webcam and Connectivity

The 8MP/4K HDR camera is a big step up from most of the competitors’ 720p webcams. In sunlight areas, videos are clear and vibrant. Noisiness infiltrates when it gets dark but it is usable. The laptop was unlocked successfully each time in less than a second using Windows Hello face recognition.

Connectivity features Intel Wi-Fi 7 (BE211) and Bluetooth 6.0, as well as three Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports that include DisplayPort 2.1 and power delivery. The only thing that’s a little less appealing for me is that it doesn’t have a USB-A port or an SD/microSD card slot and yes, I was using a USB-C hub with my external drives and SD cards all of the review period.

What I Would Change

There is no such thing as a perfect laptop and after six weeks my list of complaints is very specific. Photographers are dongle dependent because of the absence of a microSD card slot. The 14-inch OLED has a peak brightness of 400 nits, which will work OK in indoor settings but not be up to bright outdoor work. The fan operation while under light load could be made more aggressive to be silent. At $2,199 with the OLED configuration, it competes with the MacBook Pro 14 M5 for sustained multi-core performance and the peak brightness of the display, which is slightly higher for an equivalent price.

Dell XPS 14 Scoreboard:

Category Score
Design & Build Quality 9.5/10
Display Quality 9.7/10

Overall Score 9.4/10

Final Verdict

The new Dell XPS 14 finally delivers what users expected from the XPS lineup. Physical function keys, a redesigned chassis, a Tandem OLED display and Intel’s exceptional energy-saving platform come together to make a machine that doesn’t need to be compromised in the real world. As a developer, designer or writer who cares more about portability and battery power than about a discrete GPU, this is the ideal ultra portable Windows computer you can purchase today.
