Dyson Spot+Scrub AI: Brilliant Mop, Borrowed Motor

The Dyson Spot + Scrub AI has been in our house for a week or so and we are still somewhat ambivalent not because it is a bad device, but because it is so interesting that we still argue about it. It is the most fully equipped robotic floor cleaner so far that Dyson has ever produced: mopping is very good, navigation is intelligent, obstacle-detection is stable, and the multifunction dock really does offload much of the day-to-day tasks. At a cost of $1,199 it surpass the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra and iRobot Combo j9+ on mop cleaning, navigational reliability, and docking.

The first real vacuum-and-mop combo made by Dyson turns out to be a worse vacuum than the previous ones and the explanation is quite simple. No Dyson motor in it.

First Impression Out Of The Box:

The box is big. The dock is bigger. The initial impression you get on installing this is the sheer size of the cyclonic docking station which is almost 17.9 inches height, 20 inches length and 17.3 inches wide. It does not have a subtle hardware. You might have liked to stuff it under the couch but you better think again. It requires a proper counter or at least an exclusive corner.

The robot itself is clean and relatively mundane, a round disc 4.3 inches high, 14.6 inches long and 14.7 Inch wide. Dyson has dropped the D-shape of the 360 Vis Nav and instead gone round this time round making it look more of the competition than any Dyson previously. This observation is quite suitable in the future. 

The MyDyson app is primarily painless to set up. Space mapping will require a complete running or two, and the application layout is a little time consuming to get used to initially, but in just a day, it became natural. We select areas, schedule morning cleaning times, and a no-go area around the water bowl of the dog without much ado.

Dyson Built Design:

One thing Dyson is not talking about but has already been revealed by reviewers and tech writers, is that the motor inside this robot is not from Dyson company. Multiple reports suggest the motor is based on Shenzhen Picea Robotics’ R2 ODM design but Dyson has not officially confirmed this rumor. This is important since Dyson’s reputation and indeed its pricing has always been based on the engineering of its motors. At $1199 dollars, it is quite natural to find out that the suction engine is not created by Dyson itself. 

With that the 18,000 Pa suction rating is good. It is not a market leader yet in the real-world tests on hardwood, tile, and low-pile carpet, the Spot+Scrub AI did not grumble at any task. On hardwood it roughly collected 92% of the debris. 62 dB noise is measured around in standard mode, which means it’s easy to run in the background without creating any disturbance.

Using it in a 25 meter square room, the battery dropped to 18%. So we can easily use this in a middle size home with full charging at one time before it needs a dock. The auto carpet boost that increases suction by 4x, was also consistent when we changed the area rug to the hardwood in the kitchen.

The Mopping System:

It is truly where the Spot+Scrub AI stands out. The wet roller system is a Dyson invention and it is obvious.

Most of the robot mops (even the high-priced ones) share the same problem: they push a wet pad with the floor and deem it to be mopping. The real thing that occurs is that the pad becomes dirty and then transfers the dirt to a thin uneven smudge. The 12-point hydration system of Dyson is different. The microfiber roller self-cleans in all its rotations, cleansing the dirt and re-hydrating with fresh water. The outcome is that your floor is actually washed.

We tried this on dried coffee rings, a sticky splash of soy sauce on the kitchen floor and jam that was a day old (yes, we made a mess on purpose). The robot located all of them with the help of its green-spectrum LED light, detected the type of mess with the AI camera, and repeated it up to 15 times on difficult areas, until the sensors confirmed it’s clean and then it moved on. There were seven passes on the jam spill. Each of them appeared successively cleaner on the roller. The floor did not look just touched but properly mopped.

The warm water system (140°F during the cleaning, 113°F during roller drying upon returning to the dock) is also a real aid. Sticky residue can be dissolved only by warm water, which is simply incomparable to its competitors in cold water. The mop roller had a near to new appearance after two months of usage in our test setting. That is one accomplishment.

AI Stain Detection:

One of the Dyson’s signature touches in this mop, is the AI-powered camera and green LED combination. And it delivered on that claim every time. We saw it stop mid-way to light and find a dried sauce spot, we had forgotten about by the kitchen counter. It evaluated the area initially, narrowed down its cleaning behavior, repeated passages, and analyzed the area before doing so.

The system recognizes more than 100 types of household substances and adjusts to that. It also ignores the stuff which does not need to be cleaned. We never saw it attempt to clean the dark water mat belonging to the dog or chase after a shadow that it thought was a spill.

It struggles with lighter stains especially on textured tiles. In those cases, it usually makes one or two passes and moves on leaving the mixed results. Performance may change based on the surface and how long the stain has been set, something Dyson also mentioned in their own fine print.

Navigation And Obstacle Avoidance

The dual laser LiDAR + AI camera combo scans the environment seven times in a second with 24 sensors. The Spot+Scrub AI cleaned our very messy living room, weaving around charging cables, dog toys, and chair legs, and was not caught up in the cleaning even for once in three weeks of scheduled cleaning. 3 weeks of daily runs in a cluttered room without a single snag is a record in our testing.

It had the edge of making the passage between our stone entryway tile and the slightly raised wooden flooring in the hall without scruples, where two former robot vacuums had been found trapped.

A recurring disappointment we are facing with this robot is, it’s 4.3” tall, which is above the 3.8” category average, and the robot is unable to crawl under our low-profile couch and the coffee table. Those areas were required to be spot-cleaned manually. Not a dealbreaker, but an addition to anyone with a substantial amount of low furniture.

The Dock:

The large size is a valid complaint. But what that huge dock does is really impressive enough to excuse it a little.

It automatically empties the dry rubble with the Dyson root cyclone system (bag free). The transparent container lets you know precisely how much has been gathered and the one touch ejection is smooth and gratifying. Dyson says that the bin can hold up to 100 days of waste, depending on your household, which correlates with our experience in a two-person, one-dog home for around 95 days.

It also empties the dirty tank of water, fills the clean tank of water, sprays the roller with hot water and dries it with hot air at 113°F, all automatically following each clean. No handwork required on normal days.

Users of Dyson rated it at 4.0 out of 5 out of just under 1,076 reviews with 70 out of 100 users saying that they would recommend it. One of the verified buyers in March 2026 wrote: “It vacuums and cleans the floors at the same time, which saves me so much time. I love that it goes back to the station and cleans itself, which also saves me so much time!”

After two months of extensive testing, TechRadar complained about intermittent self emptying problems and some app issues but overall said that the mop was still looking like new. 

The common thread throughout the real world feedback: good mop, reliable navigation, but the vacuum performance is not quite the price point when you know that the motor used in it is not Dyson engineering.

Final Verdict:

The Dyson Spot+Scrub Ai is actually the best robot vacuum mop Dyson has till date, which is not a very large bar, but still worth mentioning. The mopping system is the best in its class, the stain detection is real and functional, the self cleaning dock is more capable than any previous Dyson robot ever did, and the navigation is reliable enough to trust running it fully unattended.

It is difficult to overlook that confession of the motor to a third party. You are not buying the engineering know-how of Dyson in the very fabric of a vacuum cleaner. You are buying the AI smarts of Dyson, their mop design and their cyclonic dock, all wrapped around another company’s suction engine.

Such a trade-off can be quite acceptable as long as you are a fan of mopping and automation but may be slightly disappointing in the case you are expecting the pure cleaning power that Dyson has its name attached to.
