During this year’s I/O conference, Google showed off its latest hardware creation called Gemini-powered AI Smart Glasses. Although it still seems rather futuristic compared to other gadgets announced by the company recently, it represents a huge step towards building a complete artificial intelligence infrastructure.
This year Google demonstrated how deep integration with Gemini AI will allow building innovative products. In addition to the already mentioned Agentic AI, Google presented a new way to use artificial intelligence: through hardware.
Specifically, the company introduced a prototype of new AI Smart Glasses that will be able to provide assistance while walking or interacting with the environment. These glasses rely on powerful multimodal analysis and reasoning of the current context.
Google’s next-gen AI Smart Glasses demonstrate some interesting changes compared to earlier models of glasses. They boast a much lighter design, higher battery performance, and better image projection than before. Also, these glasses will use a variety of modes and capabilities provided by the Gemini family of artificial intelligence models.
The new AI Smart Glasses provide real-time support, analysis of your surroundings, and assistance. Just by looking at something, you will be able to get instant information about it. Besides, it can show you directions or explain some details if needed. With voice commands, you can ask the glasses to translate languages, search for a specific object or document, find directions to your destination, or do many other things.
As we already said, AI Smart Glasses make extensive use of two powerful models of artificial intelligence by Google: Gemini 3.5 and Gemini Omni. The first is an on-device model capable of fast and efficient reasoning. It allows using AI on a local device even if the Internet is not available.
Gemini Omni is based on multimodal intelligence that allows processing several types of sensory inputs at once: visual, textual, and environmental. Due to this, the glasses can perform such actions as translating the text written on the billboard or describing the object located in the user’s visual range.
In general, these glasses act as an artificial intelligence assistant that analyzes what you see and tells you everything you should know about it. It does everything that a smartphone usually does but without taking out any devices or opening applications.
One of the most interesting abilities of the new AI glasses is real-time translation. By looking at foreign language text, you can get its translation right in front of your eyes. Also, you will be able to converse with the person speaking another language since the glasses provide a seamless real-time translation.
In addition to this, the glasses allow you to analyze your environment to determine whether there is anything interesting nearby. For example, they can show you what product is located on the shelf and help you navigate stores. You will also be able to receive instructions for preparing food or fixing a broken thing.
Besides, the glasses will alert you of any danger on the road, as well as in the surrounding area. Such capabilities allow the glasses to be used as an extremely helpful productivity tool that will allow you to do almost everything without the need to use additional devices.
Navigation through cities and streets gets a significant boost from AI-powered glasses. The AI will understand your surroundings and display appropriate directions, routes, and other navigation hints. The glasses will even be able to detect possible obstacles and give you advice on avoiding them.
Also, AI will suggest faster ways of getting to the destination and will inform about nearby cafes, pharmacies, etc. Even indoors, the navigation won’t let you get lost since AI will give you detailed hints about everything in a building.
Although Google didn’t say that much about the glasses’ accessibility features, there is no doubt that AI will allow significantly enhancing those aspects. The glasses will use the power of multimodal intelligence to analyze the surroundings in real-time and provide useful information for visually impaired people. Also, they will be able to detect any obstacles or hazardous objects around the person.
Google explicitly pointed out that the glasses aim to make the world more accessible and understandable.
Since the new glasses will have cameras, it is necessary to discuss how they will control users’ personal data. To minimize privacy problems, Google equipped the glasses with an obvious recording indicator, limited data collection, and storage, and strict guidelines regarding processing.
Also, the user will be able to control all aspects related to what is analyzed, stored, and transferred to his Google account.
Overall, the presented glasses demonstrate Google’s attempts to build hardware that will provide a unique AI-first experience. With further development of multimodal AI and context awareness technologies, the interfaces will change drastically. From a screen to a natural environment.
From TheTweaks‘ point of view, new AI glasses fit perfectly well into the overall strategy of developing the whole artificial intelligence infrastructure announced by Google recently. As usual, the company is moving in one direction and presenting different tools that will help reach the main goal: making our lives better.
These AI Smart glasses represent yet another move towards creating ambient AI. With the help of these AI Smart glasses, you’ll be able to get access to everything you need just by looking at something.
