iPhone 18 Pro is coming soon,While the iPhone Fold will get all of the attention at this year’s September event, Apple’s classic models will be the biggest sellers.
For the past 10 years, Apple’s iPhone strategy has been fairly predictable. Every Launches, the Pro models take centre stage with the best and most advanced features, while the base model offers features from previous Pro generations at a more affordable price.
But if the rumors are true, this year’s iPhone lineup will be quite different. For the first time, the Pro models won’t be the stars of the show—that’ll fall to Apple’s first folding phone.
However, even though the iPhone 18 Pro won’t be the one to dominate the headlines, it’ll still be the phone everyone rushes to buy.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has repeatedly reported that the iPhone 18 Pro “won’t be a big update,” and will be comparable to the “S” phones of old. But that doesn’t mean Apple won’t include some notable new features.
According to the latest rumors, both phones are expected to have a smaller Dynamic Island, giving slightly more screen space for content when no Live Activity is in use.
The iPhone 18 Pro are expected to feature the same general design as the iPhone 17 Pro models, offering a triple-lens rear camera system with a large camera plateau.
Rumours suggest that the Ceramic Shield area for MagSafe charging could be “slightly transparent,” but it is not clear what that means.
The front of the device could look different, with either a slimmed-down Dynamic Island or no Dynamic Island at all. Apple could potentially adopt just a hole punch cutout at the top left corner of the display for the camera, but more reliable rumors are currently pointing toward a smaller Dynamic Island.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max could be slightly thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, measuring in at 8.8mm, up from 8.75mm. Such a small difference won’t be noticeable to most users, but it is expected to increase the weight of the device, pushing it over 240 grams. The iPhone 17 Pro Max weighs 233 grams.
The two-tone effect may also be missing on the iPhone 18 Pro lineup compared to the previous generation. According to reports, Apple has tweaked the back glass design to ensure that the difference in color between the glass and the aluminum frame is less noticeable.
Cherry Red is another new color that we will see on the iPhone 18 Pro, along with a main camera lens featuring a variable aperture. There is also a small tweak on the back glass design where the cutout is concerned. The iPhone 18 Pro looks very similar to its predecessor, making an upgrade unnecessary.
Just like with all other newly launched devices by Apple, people will queue up at Apple Stores to be among the firsts to have them. At the same time, experts think that initially, the demand for iPhone Fold will exceed supply since manufacturing such an innovative smartphone is quite challenging.
That is why it is predicted that despite the simultaneous launch of iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone Fold might hit stores much later – perhaps in November or even December of this year. But of course, it is unfortunate for those who have been waiting for the latest innovation by Apple; however, this situation is not new as there have been instances when this has happened before.
In the year 2017, Apple announced both the iPhone 8 and iPhone X during the same occasion. Although the former was considered a small upgrade on the iPhone 7 through the addition of a new color, new chip, and wireless charging capability, the latter was an all-new design with full screen capability and Face ID functionality.
The production of the latter was difficult; hence, Apple took time to supply enough iPhones for consumers.That’s why the iPhone 8 hit stores in September while the iPhone X didn’t arrive until November. It still sold out almost immediately, as the iPhone Fold will almost certainly do, but it was the iPhone 8 that carried sales until the iPhone XR arrived in 2018.
That said, there’s a key difference between 2017 and now. Back then, the iPhone X represented the future of the iPhone, with the iPhone 8 quickly starting to look like outdated technology. It only took a year for the other iPhone models to adopt the same all-screen design with Face ID.
Although the idea of a foldable iPhone sounds much more exciting than yet another version of the iPhone Pro, it is unlikely to replace the idea of an iPhone for everyone.
First, there’s the cost factor. Rumors suggest that the iPhone Fold could start at $1,999. That’s significantly more than the current iPhone 17 Pro, which starts at $1,099. And even if it were cheaper, there are still other trade-offs that will make the foldable iPhone a niche product. Not everyone really feels the need to carry a mini tablet in their pocket, and not everyone is willing to give up features like better cameras or Face ID just to have a foldable phone.
