/ Apple’s September roadmap is starting to take shape.

Apple’s fall launch schedule is starting to take a leap and if the signs of the last few weeks hold up, it won’t be long before there is a definitive answer for iPhone fans regarding when the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and the software that powers it will arrive.
iOS 27 debuted for the first time at Apple‘s Worldwide Developers Conference back in June and has since been rolling out to developer betas. The release is extremely consistent, the first developer beta came the same day as the WWDC keynote on June 8, the second developer beta followed two weeks later on June 22 and the third developer beta appeared two weeks after the second beta on July 6.
So when do we have a public beta? That pattern provides a good indication. In 2022, 2023 and 2024, Apple has released its first public beta within a week of the third developer beta for the same year. The Liquid Glass facelift of iOS 26, however, did not appear to need any more than fine-tuning, which is why the public beta did not come until after a fourth developer beta, on July 24 last year.
However, this year all the signs are in favor of the older, quicker plan. It’ll either be iOS 27 public beta on Monday, July 13 or Tuesday, July 14. Adding more credibility to the timeline, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is apparently already testing the software, telling us that it’s notably stable for a beta release so early in the cycle. Stable is not synonymous with bug free. It’s still beta software, so if you can’t afford your phone to break in the middle of the day, then wait for the actual release.
The public beta will be based on the current dev build, so there’s a lot to dig into. Siri AI is the major highlight, which, apart from being much smarter, now has its very own app, and will be available in the future in a waitlist program. Parents also receive a useful improvement, they can now view what apps and websites kids are using and have more granular controls and schedules to manage their screen time.
Creatively, Apple has introduced AI-powered photo editing features that boost image content beyond the frame, updated and improved Safari tab management, a revamped Image Playground, and a more user-friendly version of Shortcuts.
The software side of the deal is coming along nicely as iOS moves closer to a public test, and the hardware side of the deal is coming together as well. Taking into account the company’s experience with past launches, a somewhat clear roadmap is starting to take shape for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and for the first time, a foldable iPhone, officially rumored to be the iPhone Ultra.
There’s some disagreement over the exact date of Apple’s September keynote. Bloomberg’s Gurman has indicated the date of Tuesday, September 8, with Wednesday the 9th as a backup. But Forbes contributor David Phelan has a strong argument on the side of September 8, stating that Apple has a history of skipping keynotes the day after a public holiday, and September 8 is the day after Labor Day. What he selects is on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m Pacific.
There, newly installed Apple CEO John Ternus will be expecting to take the stage to introduce the new iPhones, updated Apple Watches and most possible a couple of surprises as well.
The rest of the schedule is expected to fall into a similar pattern. Pre-orders are expected to start from Friday, September 11 with all of iOS 27 officially launched on Monday, September 14. The new iPhones (including the iPhone 18 Pro) will be available in stores on Friday, September 18.
If you are considering an upgrade, here’s what’s important: While the public beta offers a glimpse of the software experience within days or weeks, the actual decision making criteria pricing, final specifications and whether to wait for the foldable iPhone Ultra, won’t be known until that September keynote. But folding iPhones have been plagued by supply concerns and potentially delays, so expecting to get an Ultra on launch day might require a bit of urgency.
This year’s release schedule is extremely disciplined when it comes to Apple. If developer betas are released on a regular basis every two weeks, then it is a positive note that iOS 27 will not require as much polishing as was required by iOS 26. That seems to be a decent two month window for the public beta, if it is indeed happening on July 13-14, for testers to report bugs before the September 14 general release.
On the hardware side, a September 9 keynote seems far more likely just because Apple doesn’t want to step on Labor Day hangovers. The iPhone Ultra is the one thing that we’re most curious about. It would be Apple’s biggest hardware move in years, and if there were any rumors about supply chain, you wouldn’t be surprised to see Pro and Pro Max users receive their smartphones without a hassle on September 18, and Ultra on the shelves for several weeks after that. If you’d like to live on the edge, our advice is to set a reminder for the public beta, but wait until September 9 to pre-order and really get excited.
