Quick Verdict: The Lenovo Chromebook Duet Gen 9 is an ideal portable ChromeOS device, rather than a replacement for a full computer, for browsing, streaming, note-taking and light document creation. If you’re constantly using a computer for long typing sessions, multitasking or more than just a browser and Google’s apps, you can skip it.
Four months of daily use have proved that it’s not a laptop in disguise, but rather a very good tablet that’s wearing a laptop mask. The tablet mode on ChromeOS and the 10.95-inch touchscreen were my favorite features of the Duet. It always reminded me of the cost of the folio keyboard. If you’re using your computer for anything other than solo web browsing, then the 8GB version is worth the upgrade, I will explain this below with actual numbers, not just my word.

I’ve used the Duet Gen 9 as a real secondary device for four months, a travelling companion on two trips and on purpose, as an alternative to my primary laptop over a period of an entire week to determine its strengths and weaknesses. Since I’m spending my hands-on time on both the 4GB/64GB and 8GB/128GB models, I’m splitting my time between them and also considering RAM when I go back to the numbers later in this review rather than just tracking one model as I move from one to the other.
I used Lenovo’s rated brightness and display specifications rather than presenting them as my own measurements. The display indoors was generally run at 50-60% (~200-240 nits) and I did not need any more brightness, at night 10-15% (~40-60 nits) was sufficient. Outside in shadow the display remained readable even at 80-90% (~320-360 nits), while in direct sunlight 400 nits was required to counter the glare.
I was struck by the first thing I saw after opening the box for the Duet, its simplicity. At a mere 7.6mm thick and 0.51kg, the tablet itself is just as thin as a phone case and apart from the keyboard and kickstand, it’s actually the 11 inch tablet itself and not a laptop that easily fell apart.
Add the folio keyboard and kickstand, and the combined weight of this kit is about 1.1kg, which isn’t quite as much as most 13 inch laptops, but quite a bit more than a standalone tablet is, so when the keyboard finally clattered into place I couldn’t think of it as “a tablet” anymore.
This thing is immediately useful in terms of portability. The tablet is independent of any other devices, meaning no noticeable bulk when carried alone in a Tote bag or a laptop sleeve in a backpack to a coffee shop, and certainly not to my parents’ house where, in my mind, I didn’t want to take a full laptop.
Mechanically, switching between tablet and laptop modes is simple. The magnetic pogo pins hold the keyboard firmly in place and there’s just one strong pull to release it. The magnets are powerful enough so that your keyboard won’t slide around when you type on your lap, but not so powerful that it will take a beefy arm to remove.
The kickstand on the folio case isn’t showy, and there are only a couple of viewing angles available for it rather than smooth and continuous. On soft surfaces (such as a couch cushion, a bed, any surface an airplane tray table which has a texture to it), it sometimes took two goes to get it to a stable angle.

This leads to the lap test, where many “portable 2-in-1” promises come undone in practice. The Duet is rock solid on anything solid, such as a desk or table. Usable on my actual lap, on the couch, it needed a little babysitting. The kickstand just won’t stay up off a cushion without some form of propping in order to have a flatter base, so I had to sit cross-legged or hold one of my legs off the couch to make it work.
The tray table on the plane was too small for the kickstand to fit so it would often overhang the edge. It’s not a showstopper but it’s the kind of friction that spec sheets don’t refer to.
The biggest thing that got me to rethink what I thought I was getting for under $400 was the 10.95-inch touchscreen. With a resolution of 1920×1200, you won’t have to squint to read the smaller UI elements, and the added vertical resolution above a standard 1080p 16:9 panel is certainly noticeable at the end of a document or reading a long article.
I will be honest, since I didn’t have lab equipment to measure the actual brightness output, color gamut coverage or reflectivity, the spec below from Lenovo is what I used. I can only speak about usability and what my experience was indoors, and even in bright indirect light, in front of a window, I never looked for the brightness slider, out of frustration.
The high-quality glass panel is partially washed out in direct sunlight like any other screen at this sort of price, but it was really comfortable to use with an umbrella or on a shaded patio. The colors are vibrant but not over-saturated, and viewing angles are broad enough that you will not feel like you have to suffer to watch a video if a friend is looking over your shoulder.
It does its quiet best for touch response. Scrolling, swiping between tabs and using the tablet gestures of ChromeOS are not laggy. I have been testing with the USI Pen 2 and palm rejection has been working well for me with no unwanted marks or incorrect cursor jumps when I rest my hand on the screen when using it to write, this is not something I would expect on a budget device.
The 60Hz refresh rate is the only spec that could be considered a hindrance on the surface, but it isn’t, scrolling is not as smooth as a 90Hz or 120Hz tablet. However, it wasn’t until I was using it for the first day that I didn’t notice it in everyday use. You notice the 60Hz panel more when switching directly from a 90Hz or 120Hz phone or tablet.
This is where I want to go into a full, detailed explanation of the keyboard argument, since it’s the main drawback of this device and I’d rather explain it in detail here than to do so throughout the rest of the review.
The folio keyboard is just fine in short bursts, like replying to an email, a quick note, filling out a form. The keys have good travel for the very thin folio and I got used to the slightly restricted layout within a day. So, as I started focusing more of my writing time in a seat, it was clear that there were cracks.
I conducted a purposeful 30-minute typing test on a document, as well as a full hour of writing in Google Docs a couple of days later. In the 30 minute session, I didn’t notice much tiredness, but in the longer one, by the 45 minutes mark, my hands began to involuntarily tighten as they became soft and mushy when pressing the keys.
It’s a bit lacking in the tactile aspect, you don’t know if you hit a key until you see the letter appear, so if you are typing fast and making mistakes, you won’t know if you got the last word right until you have finished typing.
I also did some email triage and a short copywriting job on it, and in both instances I came to the same conclusion. This is a keyboard for occasional use, not for anyone who writes for a living or spends many hours a day in a word processor.

The trackpad measures roughly 48.8 × 86.8mm, so it’s noticeably cramped compared with a conventional laptop trackpad. Tracking accuracy is good for cursor movement and clicks, but multi-finger gestures such as two-finger scrolling had a moment here and there and needed another try. Information was conveyed more easily through the touchscreen than the track pad, so I had to use it more often.
Converting to tablet or laptop mode is easier than the keyboard, anyway. ChromeOS knows when it’s on a tablet and when it’s plugged in with a keyboard, and adjusts UI accordingly with no jarring “in-between” moments. Icons get bigger when it’s a tablet, the on-screen keyboard appears and disappears as needed, and I haven’t experienced any awkward moments in between.
The bottom line: good for occasional typing, bad for extended writing. I will not re-explain the conclusion here, but will just refer to it later in the review.
This is where most reviews fall short of information about how well the device will cope with common tasks. So I pushed it, with the 8GB configuration unless otherwise stated.
Making everyday use with just a few tabs open is a breeze, and this is a chip designed for it. I created five tabs (Google Mail, a Google Doc, YouTube, a news site and a web app like Slack) and I could switch between them instantly with no reloading visible.
At ten tabs, including a couple of heavier sites with embedded video, the first signs of dismay appeared: When switching to a tab that had been in the background for a while, ChromeOS seemed to lag a half-second, indicating it was starting to reclaim memory. That delay was consistent at 15 tabs.
I also had to reload tabs that I hadn’t used for the past few minutes, as opposed to resuming automatically, to get to things I had read previously, which slowed my flow a few times.
With a fair mix of applications, such as YouTube, Google Documents and Gmail running concurrently, the 8GB version had smooth performance. Google Meet calls added to that mix began causing some occasional audio stutter with the 4GB unit, but not with the 8GB unit.
Android apps function ok, but it seems the main design focus here is for ChromeOS. Lighter applications such as a note taking application, a PDF reader, a basic game start and run without hassle. Heavier Android applications or ones with more graphical content have some lag during startup and during some animations, frame drops.
I took the time to play some of the more familiar games I’d seen before and some of the more informal ones instead of something that was demanding. At native resolution they could be played at consistently playable frame rates for 20-30 minutes without any significant heat rise and battery consumption was moderate (not alarming) for extended play sessions.

So when does it start to struggle? The consistency I found throughout my testing was that performance was great up until it’s actually asking ChromeOS to run multiple background tabs and processes that exceed the RAM’s ability to hold them all in memory at once. It’s not that the Kompanio 838 is slow, it’s that the system has to start loading content when it is needed rather than it being permanently in memory, so you feel the slowdown.
I don’t think this question warrants a “more RAM is always better” answer, so let me explain the experiment: I ran the same progression of tabs as above, as well as the same YouTube plus Docs plus Gmail setup and the same Google Meet test, both on my two configurations, back to back and over similar days.
The 4GB version is fine to use, but in a manner similar to how a compact car is used, it is good for what it was intended to do, but isn’t great when you want it to do more. Slightly more serious browsing with a few tabs, Google Docs, and some casual media consumption was sufficient.
The problem began when I opened a bunch of tabs with one tab having a video call and the other tabs being background tabs, or the 4GB unit had a video call and multiple tabs opened in the background, and the 4GB unit would periodically reopen content and occasionally stutter during the video calls.
All of those same stacked scenarios were handled better on the 8GB configuration. Tabs remained more stable, video calls were more fluid and there was less of a feeling that the browser was making compromises in the background.
But is 4GB actually usable in 2026? If you use it for light usage like taking notes and light browsing, secondary streaming tablet, a kid’s device, etc., then yes. But if you’re considering using this as a daily driver with any level of multitasking, the 8GB version is worth the extra money.
The difference in price between the configurations is relatively small compared to the benefits you’ll get from each additional GB of RAM, and with the 4GB version so close to the ceiling when using it normally, I would recommend upgrading to 8GB unless you’re buying it to compete with the lowest costs possible.
On the 8GB size, I measured battery consumption for various different workloads using a few different sessions throughout the four months that I had the device.

For those who may be tempted to take this too literally, it should be noted that these are observations of the actual performance of these batteries, and are not laboratory battery tests. I didn’t do all of the tests, each one from 100% to 0% brightness and then lock it to that percentage, or do each and every test in one sitting.
I monitored how many hours the battery lasted for a typical day of this kind of usage, then checked the battery estimate feature built into the software at regular intervals. Don’t consider these as benchmarks or standard values, but more of an honest range.
Lighter, screen and browser based workloads would definitely be the 29Wh battery’s forte, and this was evident from my daily usage, my 29Wh battery held up fine for my full day of reading, browsing, and note taking. The most expensive since you’re using the camera, the microphone, speakers and a network connection at the same time are video calls.
Charging time is decent, not quick, and it does not feature a rapid-charge function; it takes a couple of hours to charge from empty to full with the included charger, and both USB-C ports can charge the Duet, which is convenient when your cable is positioned on the opposite side of the desk.
It’s clear that ChromeOS has grown in some ways to accommodate devices like this, and it’s definitely different and better when used on the Duet than when used on a standard Chromebook laptop. The interface is reorganised in tablet mode, so that all the touch targets are larger, the app drawer is a full-screen swipe-up option more like Android than ever before, and split-screen multitasking is achieved by dragging an app to the edge of the screen, which was intuitive within the first few minutes.
Support for Android apps is still a real positive for the ChromeOS ecosystem, with access to real Android apps, not web versions still important for note-taking apps with offline capabilities, streaming apps with more tablet-optimized layouts and more. There is support for Linux applications, but it’s not something I’d want to rely on on 4GB of RAM, and even on 8GB it’s something you shouldn’t use everyday as an operating environment.
As you might expect, it’s most comfortable working with Google Workspace, where Docs, Sheets, Gmail and Drive feel pretty natural with the touchscreen, especially when it comes to selecting text without reaching for the trackpad.
One of the more useful accessories that I found myself using with the Duet is the USI Pen 2 that comes with some of the configurations. When taking notes, handwriting did not feel laggy at all, there is a small amount of input latency that you can feel if you’re looking for it, but if you’re just taking notes at normal speed, it did not feel like there was a lag.
The pen was really useful for marking up PDFs, whether it be annotating a reading assignment or just signing a form, and the precision with which the pen tip provides highlighting of fine details compared to the fingertip was a welcome addition.
Casual use (diagrams, doodles, simple illustrations) was generally good, but I wouldn’t consider this an option for serious digital art, as it required a mid-range display and didn’t work for more demanding art applications on the Kompanio 838. Using ChromeOS’s built-in tablet feature for annotating a screenshot complemented the pen, making it easy to send a screenshot annotated with a pen.
Does the pen make the Duet more meaningful? Yes, for readers and notetakers in particular. If it is not a use case where you need PDF marking or handwriting, it’s a nice-to-have, not a must have, if it is in the configuration, it is a real value add and not just a marketing checkbox.

This section is restricted, as the headline battery figures are above. Video calling worked well enough with the webcam, which features a physical privacy shutter and a 5MP front camera, but this is a nice addition for those who don’t like the camera peering at them all the time.
The rear camera, which has auto-focus, is more than adequate for a phone that most people will only use for taking photos from time to time, but it was very convenient for me to use for snapping a picture of a white board or quickly scanning a document.
While you’re working, speaker quality is good enough for casual video and music, but thin and without bass for anything you really want to hear, you’ll need to grab headphones or a Bluetooth speaker.
Both the USB-C ports are on opposite sides of the device, and both can be used for charging and data transfer, however, neither port or charging method provides any acceleration, which means the charging time will be similar with either port or charging combination, as long as it’s capable of up to the base power.
One welcome surprise is the 3.5mm headphone jack, something many modern tablets and Ultra portables have abandoned. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1+ completed a connectivity experience that never failed me, not a single time when I had to pair a couple of different Bluetooth headphones I tried, I had dropped connections.
It is probably the use case that Lenovo had in mind the most and it is reflected. Most of what a typical class day will require is taken directly in a notes app or Google docs and the USI pen 2 is used to annotate PDF files or draw diagrams. Google Classroom and the rest of the Google Workspace suite work seamlessly and the streamlined design meant there was no strain in carrying it from one class to another.
With average use, this battery will last throughout a full day of classes. For students, the limits of the keyboard are not as significant as they are for professional writers because most of the time, students’ typing is done in short bursts and not in hour-long sessions.
The Duet’s tablet-first identity truly shines through when it comes to travel. At roughly 1.1kg with the keyboard and stand, it’s lighter than many conventional laptops while remaining substantially more capable than carrying a standalone tablet.
Whether it’s in-flight, during layovers, or when you’re stuck in a hotel room, tablet mode will make it nice to be able to stream or browse the web on a large, easy-to-view screen without having to lug a full-sized laptop around with you.
A long flight of streaming or reading requires no plug as the battery holds up sufficiently, and you’re not having to search for the right side of a cramped airplane seat outlet as both the USB-C port can charge the battery. For serious writing on the road, the same keyboard fatigue mentioned above will be in effect, but if you’re just having fun on the road, this is a no-brainer.
I tested it directly for one week intentionally during my extended four month use of the device, word processing in Google Docs, spreadsheet work in Sheets, a couple of video calls, research across a dozen-plus tabs, basic file management and connecting to an external 1080p monitor to see how it performs in a more deskbound environment.
Word processing and spreadsheet work was fully usable, as long as it wasn’t a huge document or a formula-heavy spreadsheet. Video calls were functional on the 8GB variant and had minimal impact on the 4GB model when used in conjunction with other open tabs, as in the performance section above.
ChromeOS’s file management system via the Files app is working, but somewhat less advanced than a full desktop OS, especially for users who are more accustomed to having multiple windows with detailed folder structures and drag and drop operations.
The external monitor test proved to be the most revealing part for this section. I was able to do basic things like extend the desktop and use a browser and a document at the same time with the external display active and the Duet performed well, but it was noticeable that the performance dropped as soon as I did more demanding multitasking across two displays, and as soon as I started using all my keys the shortcomings of the keyboard became more apparent as well.
The Duet Gen 9 isn’t the only detachable or 2-in-1 Chromebook in this price range, and the unabashed comparison largely depends on the optimization you’re looking for.

It will depend on what you’d like to discover after you take out the keyboard. The tablet form of the Duet Gen 9 is really really good, sharp, bright touch screen, smooth tablet mode, solid battery life and a tablet body so light, you don’t have to think about carrying it around. As a laptop, it’s fine for light laptop tasks, for browsing the internet, for using it to read email etc, it’s fine, the problem with it is the keyboard and the track pad as described in detail above.
It’s a very good tablet, and has a keyboard that’s not the ideal device, but a really useful one nonetheless, not completely the same idea but more of a device that lets you get into whichever mode is right for the moment.

After all the excitement of being a review item is over, and four months in my bag, I can say that the Lenovo Chromebook Duet Gen 9 is now a permanent fixture in my bag. It’s not the chip that’s trying to be everything, it’s the tablet that works and when you need a keyboard, it has one and when you don’t, it’s easy to remove.
For users who don’t need to type much and use the web on a daily basis, you should not hesitate to purchase the 8GB version. If you’re looking to write, work in a spreadsheet, and multitask all day, consider something more like the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514. If you’re not in the bottom, or top, of the budget, this is one of the simplest budget 2-in-1 recommendations I’ve given in a long time.
