Quick Verdict
Levoit Core 300-p works best in smaller bedrooms and home offices. I used mine in a 120 sq. ft. bedroom and later moved it to a 350 sq. ft. open living room. It handled the bedroom easily, the living room pushed it much harder.
Best strength: It takes the job without needing to be acknowledged. No opening app, no notifications, no setup other than plugging it in and selecting its speed.
Biggest weakness: Not thinking about running costs until I sat down and did the calculations. The purchase price is low enough that I never thought about ownership costs. Six months later, the filter replacement and electricity bill made that calculation harder to ignore.
Who should I recommend? I’d recommend it if you have the right-sized room and you’re comfortable with the ongoing filter and electricity costs.
Should you buy it over the Core 300S? If you’d rather control everything from your phone, the 300S makes more sense.
Six months ago, I began testing my air purifier in two rooms, the bedroom at night and the living room during the day, even during a period when a lot of cooking was being done as well as a period where my friend’s cat stayed at my place for some time.
The Levoit Core 300-P represents a refresh of Levoit’s best selling model, the Core 300. This model boasts the same cylindrical design, same button and dial controls, and same three-stage filtration system, but has a higher CADR rating, alongside an advertised coverage area of 1,066 sq ft.
It’s designed for those who seek a purifier for a single room in their home, but don’t want to invest in an app connection or a screen they’ll look at twice and forget about.
One-sentence verdict: It’s a great single room air purifier that eventually became so unnoticeable that either that’s the highest compliment you can pay or the cause why I almost forgot about this review.
I tested the Core 300-P for six months in two rooms: my 120 sq. ft. bedroom with the door closed and 350 sq. ft. open living/kitchen space. The purifier was operated on all four speed settings Sleep, Low, Medium, and High, during the tests including cooking periods and two weeks when I had a cat at home.
I visually inspected the filter condition every couple of weeks and vacuumed pre-filter as required. I used a consumer PM2.5 monitor instead of laboratory calibration equipment and consider these results as directional as opposed to laboratory grade. In addition, I used my phone’s SPL meter to approximate noise levels.

Levoit lists the Core 300-P as changing the air in a 1,066 sq. ft. room once per hour, with noise as low as 24dB in its quietest mode.
Note that 143 CFM is specifically the smoke CADR, dust and pollen CADR are rated higher (153 and 167 CFM). These are Levoit’s specifications, the rest of this review is about what they actually felt like day to day.
Levoit advertises two room sizes for the same unit: 1,066 sq. ft and approx. 222 sq. ft. They are both manufacturer claims but at different target ACHs. Air Changes per Hour or ACH is a measure of how many times per hour a purifier can theoretically clean all the air in the room.
The 1,066 sq. ft. coverage doesn’t claim that the Core 300-P can effectively purify a 1,066 sq. ft. room at the same efficiency level it can a 222 sq. ft. room it’s an area for which the manufacturer calculates 1 ACH, or the minimum purification speed.

~222 sq. ft. is the area at which the manufacturer calculates 4.8 ACH, or high-speed purifications. ~222 sq. ft. is a number you need to focus on. I experienced the difference myself as soon as I moved the purifier from my 120 sq. ft. bedroom to my 350 sq. ft. living room, its effectiveness visibly changed.
An average customer seeing “1,066 sq. ft.” printed on the packaging could easily assume that this number is a recommended room size. It isn’t. It is the maximum coverage area at 1 ACH. For a bedroom, you should consider ~222 sq. ft. instead of a four-digit number.
I set it up initially in the bedroom, on the nightstand, beside a lamp and a pile of books which had to be thrust onto the floor. It’s compact, but larger in person than product photos make it look.
After a few days, I lost sight of it when it was there, and that’s the best thing that could have happened to a piece that’s supposed to be in the background. The plastic does not have that feeling of being cheap. In the past six months, I moved it from one room to another one-handed countless times and not a single piece rattled off or made any sound.
The control ring on the top is a combination of soft-touch buttons surrounded by lights. I knew how to operate it even before the second use, which cannot be said about all the little appliances that I own. But the child lock control took me longer to figure out than the other buttons. I pressed it by mistake when trying to change speed a couple of times.
The lower part is perforated and air is drawn in and pushed out from the top. I found myself discovering this in an embarrassing way. I put it up against the wall in the living room to put to good use the floor space and it seemed to be significantly less effective than a few inches away.
After I got it going all the way around, I felt like it was working just the way it should. The important lesson: ‘fits anywhere’ doesn’t mean it performs equally well everywhere. By around week two, I was able to see a grey film forming on the intake mesh, more than I was anticipating from just dust.
When I began using the vacuum cleaner, with the brush attachment, to actually sweep it, as opposed to just ignoring it, which the manual says it should be done monthly, in a room where there’s any real foot traffic or a pet in the vicinity it demands attention far more than that.
The clearest design win is the filter access. Remove the bottom cap and the filter slides straight out, no tools and no struggle with clips.
It’s a minor convenience that was a big deal for me each time I needed to use it, compared to some other purifiers that I have experienced where I had to fight a rear panel for the urge to use it. The power cord wasn’t long enough for my preferred living-room placement, so I needed an extension cord.
This is the layer that will capture anything that is clearly in the room and in this case, because a cat was part of the testing period, I was able to see this in a way that I didn’t anticipate. I didn’t get to see how far this pre-filter gets before it catches a dusty fur, but that happened within days, just about guaranteeing that it was doing something.
I vacuumed it every two weeks, otherwise, it appears it would be getting more dust load on the main filter sooner, but did not test that side by side to determine just how much sooner.
This layer does the actual work on dust, pollen, smoke particles, pet dander, and fine particulates. What really matters in this case is not the efficiency of capturing particles, but how much cleaned air it can pump into your room per hour — and it’s described by the CADR above. A super-efficient filter connected to weak airflow would clean the room slow enough. And this difference became visible once I moved it into the living room.
Levoit describes the filter of the Core 300-P as HEPA-grade. According to independent sources, it could or could not be classified as “True HEPA”. As there are different opinions, I wouldn’t rely on the “True HEPA” label for buying purposes, actual room-size performance and CADR figures are much more important parameters.
The six-month test period provided me with enough confidence in its effectiveness in removing regular dust and particulates from the air in the correct room-size, though I haven’t conducted the laboratory efficiency tests.
Levoit claims that the carbon layer will help remove smoke, fumes, VOCs and home odors, cooking odors in particular and pet odors in particular. I was most hesitant to sign up for this one, and during an actual cooking week, it proved true that some of my skepticism was warranted.
The fume smell in the living room seemed to dissipate much faster with the unit on High after a hard cooking time (such as onions, garlic, something in the pan for a while) as opposed to that one night I forgot to turn it on. But “faded faster,” isn’t “gone in ten minutes”.
It’s meant to be used for background assistance, not a substitute for opening a window or using a range hood. I would not assume that such a $100 purifier would be able to completely neutralize a strong VOC source such as fresh paint, as that would be a ventilation issue, not a purifier filter cartridge.

This section is the one that’s most valuable to invest in real equipment. The room feels fresher and becomes a number with a consumer PM2.5 monitor, it doesn’t have the quality of a laboratory monitor, but it’s still a number.
Bedroom (120 sq. ft., door closed), overnight on Sleep or Low: This was the most straightforward application of the purifier. I kept my bedroom door closed most nights and mornings there were notably less stale than what I would usually experience without it. PM2.5 before: 18 µg/m³. After 30 minutes: 6 µg/m³.
Living Room (350 sq. ft., open to the kitchen and hallway): This was when the room-size math really kicked in. On Medium, it seemed more about keeping up with whatever the room produced than actively purifying anything – I noticed it having to work a bit harder during/after cooking, but not winning in the same fashion as in the bedroom. I found myself using it on High in the evenings to feel like it was keeping up, which changed the noise equation.
Doors open vs closed: There was a greater difference than I anticipated. The door was open to the hallway, and it took a long time for the room to clean up, compared to a closed door. There seemed to be a lot of air exchange happening in the bedroom.
The pet week: A stress test I stumbled upon that I now find the most useful. Hair and dander were always there, just a smattering, but consistent presence, as there was a cat in the apartment during part of the testing. It did not make the apartment pet-free, though I could definitely notice the difference when I turned it off for a day to make comparisons, dust and hair on dark surfaces returned faster when the purifier wasn’t on.
No Auto Mode: This one is repeated outright, it’s what I was the last to get used to: no sensor deciding for you. I was the sensor. When I didn’t bump it up after cooking, it continued at whatever speed I left it at. That is OK once it becomes a habit, it is a bit of a nuisance for the first few weeks.
Levoit’s range is as low as 24dB in quietest mode. This is a directional (not laboratory calibrated) measurement from the bed at approximately 3 feet away, taken from a phone-mounted SPL meter.

My routine eventually settled into Sleep mode in the bedroom. I used High only during the day, mainly after cooking, when I wanted maximum airflow. I did not run anything named High, it was never a hardship, it is as plain as a pikestick and an obvious no go from the first week I had it.
I didn’t notice the fan getting louder or developing a rougher sound over six months of nightly use. Over the course of six months of use at night, I did not hear the fan getting louder or sounding any rougher in its operation.
I didn’t use a plug-in power meter during the test period, so I can’t provide you with per-speed consumption figures from my own measurements. All what Levoit provides is its 56W peak rated draw — it is useful as the upper limit for estimates, even without the actual average.
Formula: Annual electricity cost = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × hours/day × 365 × your electricity rate
Using the 56W peak-rated figure as a continuous-high estimate at a $0.16/kWh US average rate:
Of course, the purifier operates most of the time at Sleep or Low speeds, which draw much less power than the peak rating — and actual annual cost for the usual bedroom use case would be much lower than that $77 figure. Without having average measurements, I’d rather provide you with the range of possible annual cost (~$15–77 depending on how much time you spend on High speed) than the estimate I haven’t verified myself. A $15–25 plug-in power meter would take you five minutes per setting.
Your actual cost would be affected by the electricity rates, fan speed, runtime, and filter replacement frequency. This table is based on the figures above.

So, whilst I’m going without an app for six months, I never had to reach for my phone, wishing I had one. It didn’t take more than a few weeks for me to get used to it and not have to bother with it anymore because I’m always the one to notice the cooking smell and adjust the speed myself.
The class “very good” applied to PM2.5 concentration by the sensor with the 300S is around 35µg/m³. It’s not a health standard, it’s a set threshold for adjusting fan speed, and I wouldn’t use the app’s “very good” as a health indicator either.
My opinion: The manual speed change achieves the same basic air cleaning function as that of the 300S; and less time was required than a month to get into the routine.
Core 300-P versus Levoit Vital 100S-P: This device is supposed to be quieter, less expensive, has two times as much carbon in it as 300-P, as well as built-in air quality sensor and phone connectivity to provide superior odor control. So if you find cooking odors to be handled well enough, this one would be an obvious way to go.
Core 300-P versus Winix budget purifiers: CADR per dollar and similar price range. Normally, even at this price level Winix purifiers usually feature a PM2.5 sensor and auto mode, and this is indeed an additional feature comparing to Core 300-P if I forgot to switch the speed to higher levels. Levoit’s claim to fame is its wide filter line up (Pet Allergy, Toxin Absorber, Smoke Remover variants) and it would have been useful during cat week if I had foreseen it and tested it.
To conclude, if the room requires air changes in accordance with the higher recommendations of Levoit, the cheap and simple 300-P would be the preferred choice. In this case, purchase a purifier with the sensor (Vital 100S-P or sensor-based Winix), if auto operation or savings on operating costs are more important for you than price of the unit.

Purchase if: You have a bedroom or smaller living room (about 220 sq. ft.), you don’t care to think about an application, you don’t care to bump up the speed when you prepare food or a pet is around.
Avoid it if: you need to cover an open plan area like my living room, you want the unit to smell the cooking or pet smells before you do, or smell/VOC control is your top priority (then consider the Vital 100S-P).

It earned its place on my nightstand. It’s quiet, simple and effective when used in a room it’s actually sized to handle. It was a lesser success in my living room, not so much for the numbers as because that room was always going to call more on it than the numbers would allow.
Once I added the filter replacement and estimated electricity cost, the ownership picture looked less cheap than the purchase price suggested. The Core 300-P isn’t really a cheap purifier. It’s a purifier that’s cheap to buy and moderately priced to run.
Would I purchase it again? Yes, of course for the bedroom. If it’s a living room, I would think twice about going up in size.
