Microsoft Tests Redesigned Windows 11 With Dark Mode And More

The Win+R box has looked more or less the same since Windows 95. It’s finally getting a makeover courtesy of Microsoft, and the change is actually going into the version of Windows it was designed for this decade.

The Run dialog had always been a great, very telling example of the inconsistency problem in Windows 11. I used to call it the glaring box of legacy. You could summon it on your dark-mode desktop and see not into some long-lost layer of UI, but right into the past.

The Win+R Run command of yore was rewritten to feel more modern, in a more Fluent Design theme, faster to launch, with some new features that will be immediately discoverable for those accustomed to using PowerToys. Clint Rutkas chronicled the team’s process of taking a 30-year-old utility and re-imagining it without years of muscle-memory-equity using Windows Terminal, and PowerToys.

It’s a peculiar one, but more to do with the fact they have removed the Browse button on the Run menu (the shortcut to user files) as opposed to the others but I’m sure it is rarely used. Also, it seems that, instead of one tilde-backslash command less they introduced one more, so nothing will actually change here and power users who got used to browse will simply don’t find their needed folders without browsing it, while forced to retrain the habit of using Browse cleaner and quicker dialogue is offered for all.

The new design makes Run look trim, text field in center and Run button at right side.The new Run dialog will be a completely optional feature which you’ll have to enable from Advanced Settings so that users, who like to use classic version, can continue using the same.

It’s not just a decision, though. Marcus Ash, the head of Windows Design, revealed that the company is creating tools in-house to update more legacy dialogues and system UI in Windows 11. “We began with updating dark mode in the Run dialogue and several File Explorer surfaces to treat customer asks. At the same time we are constructing tooling to be able to scale modernizing other dialogues across Windows 11 that were built in legacy frameworks,” X posted by The Run dialogue is just a small part of what’s coming.

The new feature is being rolled out as an opt-in to Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel, and Microsoft is specifically asking power users to try it out and give feedback via the Feedback Hub. No word as to when it might be delivered to general release.

So, assuming a good feedback on the concept and not too much complaints about how it is working in practise there are no reasons for Microsoft not to include the revamped Run dialog as part of an upcoming build of Windows 11. In the past, features which become popular with end users tend to migrate into Dev or Beta version within several month and into a stable branch after 6-9 more months. But this is no any strict timeframe.

At the very least, Run dialogue can now be said to be in 2026. The larger narrative to note is whether the rest of the legacy corners of Windows 11 follow.
