OpenAI Tweaking the Smartphone Industry As We Know It

Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities (HK) has updated through his X (Formerly Tweeter) that OpenAI is in talks with MediaTek and Qualcomm for the development of jointly manufactured chips that support the AI agentic model. Luxshare Precision Industry  will be the exclusive manufacturing partner.  Luxshare previously relied heavily on Apple for its supply chain, and could gain advantage  OpenAI is reportedly planning to enter the Smartphone Industry but with a different approach. It is estimated that OpenAI may start production of such phones as early as 2028. They are not going to follow the market standards that all other smartphone industries are following, including Apple. 

OpenAI is taking an ambitious step, estimates suggest that mass production of such smart AI phones, that can be termed as “Phone Agents”, will work very differently than the usual smartphones. Kuo noted that these phones will have AI Agents instead of apps. This means that instead of apps that perform tasks on the phone manually. These OpenAI’s AI Agentic interfaces may perform tasks on users’ behalf. Kuo expressed the importance of this interface,

“Users are not trying to use a pile of apps. They are trying to

get tasks done and fulfil needs through the phone.”

This is very clear that the user in the phone has one intent to get the task done. Currently, the option a smartphone user has is the apps, that’s it nothing else. OpenAI’s vision can change how users approach smartphones. 

Why does OpenAI make phones? OpenAI has to create the whole infrastructure on its own to minimize the cost and deliver a reliable AI Smartphone. Another motivation could be “user’s full real-time state, which is the most important input for real-time AI agent inference. ” Kuo stated. Lastly, Smartphones are used by the majority of the public and time spent on smartphones is more than on any other device. This can allow a greater AI training model for OpenAI to make its future AI model better. 

The other feature the OpenAI may integrate in the phones could be cloud integration along with the device AI model. This will allow the phone to perform better in complex queries. Simple tasks available to on-device AI, can be performed locally.  If a task becomes complicated the query can be handled by a powerful cloud AI model. 

OpenAI has already announced plans to launch its physical AI device at the end of 2026. Not much has been revealed by OpenAI about it; however, Sam Altman has suggested that the device should be kept as simple as possible.

This OpenAI smartphone has the potential to reshape the whole phone industry. The user’s tasks can be performed by typing or voice commands. This increases user experience and users rely on AI Agent to perform tasks.
