Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold: The Future that fits in your pocket

You enter the Samsung Experience Store with no plans of purchasing anything. Being a tech gadget writer your purpose is to do research. You do not make an impulse purchase of a phone that costs almost three thousand dollars.

And a sales rep gives you the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold. You unfold it once. Twice. And all of a sudden logic fades, hesitation disappears and your card is being swiped.

The hype before the launch:

Give me a moment to rewind. When the first rumors about the Galaxy Z TriFold around its release on December 5 came around the internet did what the internet does, half of the crowd started to declare it vaporware, the other half started checking their bank accounts.

Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold happened to launch on 30th January, 2026. And the new Galaxy Z TriFold sold out minutes after being launched by Samsung. Not hours. Minutes. That in itself ought to say something. Indeed, Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold was selling at an impressive rate upon release in all markets it entered Korea, Singapore, UAE before even reaching U.S.A shelves. By the time it was released, the hype was nearly unbelievable.

The magic trick:

The noise the Galaxy Z TriFold smartphone makes when completely unfolded is a distinct, rewarding click-Click, as both hinges adjust one another and a full 10-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen unfolds in your hands. It is the type of sound that is engineered and intentional. 

I was there with what was virtually a tablet in the same hand, I had been holding my phone. No bag. No case. Only the Galaxy Z TriFold 10-inch display, which folded out of what was in my jacket pocket two seconds ago.

That’s not a feature. That’s a magic trick.

Price: Cheaper Than Expected

Before I start breaking it down, I must mention the elephant in the room, as Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is cheaper than previous expectations.

Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold was released at $2,899.00, only in Samsung.com and Samsung Experience Stores. One configuration. One color. No promotion deals at launch.

Compared to what you would spend on a flagship phone and a decent tablet, one on top of the other, the math begins to add up differently. This isn’t meant to be a mainstream phone. It is targeted to early adopters who want a single Galaxy Z Trifold smartphone to use both as a phone and as a tablet.

Industry analysts and leakers were speculating up to $3,200 and even more, on a phone of this engineering advancement. Yes. But not for a phone that folds into something that looks like it belongs in the future.

Build Quality:

Be frank with you–and here some of you will shut the tab. The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold phone is bulky. At 309 grams, it’s noticeably heavier than the Z Fold 7’s 215g. You will have that in your pocket. After 20 minutes of use, you will feel that in your hand. And this is the thing that no one tells you: you cease to notice.

What you continue to notice is that when laid flat, the device is only 3.9mm at its thinnest point, which is even thinner than an iPhone Air, or the Galaxy S25 Edge. It’s a paradox. Some sort of impossibly-thin-when-open and chunky-when-fold contradiction that works somehow.

It has a frame made of aluminum, a cover screen made with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and has an IP48 rating, so it is not delicate.

The screen:

The Galaxy Z TriFold has an enormous 10-inch foldable screen, a tablet with a wide screen that can be converted to a phone. A second after I opened a video about the inside in a YouTube on the inner display, the person who was next to me at the store literally swiveled around to look. Full strangers. Staring. That’s the Galaxy Z TriFold effect.

Is the display flawless? No. The TriFold does not get as bright as the Fold 7 even on a larger canvas, you can see this in the daytime sun. It has a crease as well. Technically, two of them. You adapt quicker than you would think, but it is there.

The crease is the price of foldable technology. And at 10-inch in your pocket it would be a price worth paying.

Let’s discuss Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold features because there is much going on behind that beautiful exterior.

The TriFold is powered by a customized Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, has a 200MP main camera, and has the largest battery Samsung has ever installed in a foldable phone. The Armor FlexHinge system is the latest hinge technology in Samsung.

Then there is the Galaxy Z TriFold one UI multitasking experience and this is where the device truly stands out of all others on the market. Three applications, concurrently operating, on a 10-inch screen. I had a document, and a browser in the middle and Slack on the right side, all on my phone.  Pinning stuff to the taskbar, dragging items across panels, smooth continuation of apps as you fold and unfold it all just comes natural. This transforms your life in case you work using your phone.

Performance:

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is no big deal. The transition between intensive programs, using Galaxy AI, capturing 200MP pictures and editing them on that inner display instantly – no stutter, no hiccup, no hesitation.

This is how a $2,899 device should feel. And it does.

Battery:

The problem with foldables has been with the battery. Bigger screen, more drain. I was doubtful.

A battery with a capacity of 5,600mAh, the biggest battery in any Samsung foldable, and a realistic combination of cover and main display use makes the TriFold last a day with ease. The point is that the majority of the normal usage occurs on the 6.5-inch cover screen, which is much more friendly to the battery life than the inner display.

Wired charging handles of 45W are suitable to make rapid top-ups throughout the day, whereas wireless charging of 15W is effective at night. Samsung even includes the 45W power adapter in the box, first for Galaxy foldables.

Camera:

The camera system of Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold phone has 200MP primary, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom . It is the same DNA as the Fold 7 – great all around.

The difference here is that when you open a photo in the inner display to edit it, you are doing it on what is like a personal studio monitor. Precision of colors, sharpness of details, ability to edit it all is a completely different experience. The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold doesn’t just take great photos. It changes the way of communicating with them.

TriFold vs Huawei Mate XT:

Huawei was the pioneer in the trifold market as it launched its first Huawei Mate XT (trifold) in late 2025. The Huawei Mate XT is a variant of the same concept, unlike the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold. Huawei is more towards hardware beauty and radical form factor innovation whereas Samsung is more towards software maturity and daily usability. Mate XT may succeed on design audacity, but the TriFold is more finished, particularly in the UI multitasking and app continuity which makes the additional display area useful.

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is not a new foldable, but serious engineering effort of the time when foldables finally come to make sense. It does not try to be a phone pretending to be a tablet, it proudly becomes either by what you require at that time.

It is not for everybody and it does not even try to do so. But if you have ever wished to have one device that truly takes the place of your phone, and your tablet, this is as close as the industry has gotten, so far. I entered curiously. I left with the belief that this is the direction that personal phone is going.
