Samsung has officially unveiled the company’s latest addition to its cult favorite portable projector line, The Freestyle+ and the highlight of this isn’t the portability of the device, it’s the brain power. The company is marketing the Freestyle+ as an AI powered device that essentially takes care of the thinking for you, no time wasted fiddling with a tripod, no need to use a measuring tape and no squinting at an image on your bedroom wall that’s not straight. You just point at it and it plays.
The projector is now available at Samsung.com and selected retailers for $1,199.99.
All projector brands claim some version of setting it up in seconds but Samsung’s Head of Home Entertainment, Shane Higby is putting the pressure on AI saying the Freestyle+ is actually delivers on that promise. It adjusts for patterned walls, uneven lighting and even physical obstacles in the room, without any user input after just making sure the lens is aimed in the right direction.
That’s a nice change of perspective. Older portable projectors were purchased for size and convenience. This one is selling you on not thinking.
Ignoring all marketing announcement and here are some things that are really different about this generation:
The projector can now fix image distortion in uneven, non white surfaces, via 3D Auto Keystone and Wall Calibration. The system reads the surface and adjusts color and brightness to its surface, such as patterned wallpaper, colored walls, and uneven plaster. It’s the most important feature for tenants in flats who may not have a blank wall.
The image can be pushed to fill a wall space and if somebody or something enters the projection space the screen will go in a different direction, but not just end up getting interrupted.
Real time ultrasonic focus is a built-in motor that will measure the distance to the wall and refocus instantly, which may sound trivial until everyone is waiting for a projector to focus during a backyard movie night.
In the picture and sound department, it’s up to 100 inch projection, 430 ISO lumens, PurColor processing and support for HDR10+, numbers that are good for a device of this size, but with “up to 100” and “430 lumens” that’s obviously going to vary from a sunny backyard to a darkened room. The audio is delivered through a built-in dual passive woofers speaker with 360 degree surround sound, and can sync with Samsung compatible soundbars for added “punch” if you have one.
Samsung is also integrating the Freestyle+ into its Vision AI suite, the same AI interface it has featured across all of Samsung’s 2026 TV lineup, which also includes Bixby and Gemini for voice queries and suggestions. Over 750 channels with Samsung TV Plus, cloud gaming without the console with the Gaming Hub, and mirroring with the Tap View, Smart View for Galaxy devices and AirPlay 2 for iPhone and iPad.
Plus there is a Freestyle Battery Base (sold separately) or USB-C battery support compatible for this, which isn’t a projector that you have to run from a wall outlet, instead it is a “watch anywhere” product.
AI features have fine prints and that’s the part where you should sit as a reviewer and not a spec sheet reader. In order for Wall Calibration and Obstacle Avoidance to work, both functions must be turned on manually first. The Vision AI Companion requires a Samsung account, agrees to the conditions of the Viewing Information Service and the age limitation of 18+, which is understandable for a connected device in 2026, but it suggests that there’s an additional procedure that will probably come as a surprise for a potential buyer.
It makes sense to wonder just how much of it is actually new, and how much of it is just the old automatic keystone and obstacle detection algorithms that projectors manufacturers used for years, and which now carry the name of AI. The idea Samsung appears to be proposing is that they’ll put them all under one umbrella of AI and amplify the marketing message, and that’s a good plan, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good engineering plan; there’s a difference between the two.
The Freestyle+ knows how to play up its strengths and hide its weaknesses. The Freestyle+ represents an intelligent solution for a device class that needs updating. The wall calibration and obstacle detection feel real world and practical, whereas the focus on portability and battery life maintains the Freestyle naming.
Here, the areas where we would temper our expectations: For $1,199.99, you are paying for convenience features which require manual engagement, logging into the ecosystem, and ideal conditions to work properly. If you are currently using Samsung or Galaxy products and do not want to love more than one brand of devices, it is a decent choice. This is not a must buy if you just want to get a projector regardless of lumens per dollar cost. This is one of the best designed Freestyle we have seen so far on paper, but we will see once we get hands on experience.
