Microsoft has done something unusual for once: it has deliberately designed its search bar to be less profitable to use.

From July 13, 2026, Windows Insiders enrolled in the Experimental channel start receiving the redesigned Search Box that removes promotional links, clears up the home screen and offers an ability to turn off web and Microsoft Store suggestions for the very first time. With this update, you can easily instruct the computer to make only local searches.

What is So Different About This Redesign from Microsoft’s Other Fixes

Unlike other updates for Windows, this one takes away features instead of adding new ones. In order to search for something for years you needed to scroll through Bing trending topics, sponsored links and promotions from the Store. Microsoft added all of them intentionally to increase the traffic to Bing and Store listings.

Removing them means Microsoft voluntarily giving up some of that funnel in exchange for goodwill. That is why this is such an interesting case of a company redesigning something it was using to make profit and most of the articles covering the update missed this angle completely.

What Has Changed with This Update

This redesign affects nearly all aspects of searching process:

  • A new calmer home screen replaces the old messy design with faster access to recent searches, without any news or store promotions in the way.
  • Sponsored products are no longer listed first on the results page; the most relevant one is now shown, with all the promotional placements completely eliminated from view.
  • A toggle available in Settings > Privacy & Security > Search helps you choose whether the web and Microsoft Store suggestions appear in the results. Want only local search? No problem, you can now make it happen.
  • Local content has priority over everything else. Apps, settings and files get preference over web or store suggestions when your own content is more relevant and system shortcuts like This PC or Recycle Bin become easier to access.
  • Search has been tuned up regarding typo tolerance. It now tolerates lost, additional letters and partially written names of apps as Microsoft explains, now it will recognize “utlook” as “Outlook”.

Settings search has got its first adjustment, with many more ranking adjustments promised for the coming months, while file search now supports two character query and displays cloud/connected files more prominently when they are more relevant.

Also, Microsoft claims that it has worked on the backend reliability and now wants to reduce crashes and loading failures related to the Search Box.

Labels in Results That Really Help

One small but really useful change: search results now come with clear labels that help you understand the kind of item you are trying to find: app, setting, file, web result, or a Store suggestion. While this might sound insignificant, it solves a longstanding problem of guessing whether your click is going to open the file or launch the tab.

Windows K2 in General

It is important to mention that this particular change is not isolated; it is a part of the bigger project known internally as Windows K2 which stands for addressing users’ frustration with File Explorer, Windows Update and recovery tools instead of chasing the flashy artificial intelligence news. Search has arguably been the most criticized feature of Windows 11 from the day of its release so it makes sense.

It also fits into the current timeframe well with the competition from macOS Spotlight and third party launchers PowerToys Run and Raycast, both of which were built around local first fast and distraction free search. Microsoft cannot afford to miss this trend. It is necessary from the competitive point of view.

Availability of the New Design

For now, it is limited to Insiders and even there it is rolled out gradually through the Controlled Feature Rollout, so different users with the same build may receive different changes. According to Microsoft, a simple restart can trigger the update and it is also possible to activate it through the feature flags for early access.

The wider availability of the update for all Windows 11 users is expected later this year, depending on the success of testing and the lack of critical feedback (which you can leave in Feedback Hub under Desktop Environment > Search).

TheTweaks Verdict

This is one of the most consumer oriented updates to Windows Search in recent years and the fact that it comes at the cost of Microsoft’s ad space makes it more believable than most of “improvement” announcements. The typo tolerance and local result prioritization were long overdue and should have been delivered long ago and the privacy toggle is the main highlight of this update it finally offers the user the chance to have the search he/she wants and not be forced to use some third party tweaks or hacks to turn it local only.

What we would improve: promotional content has gone away, but web and Store suggestions remain as the default feature that is decluttering, not a local first default and Microsoft could go further with making local only search the default option.

Our verdict: This is a good update indeed, not a cosmetic one. It shows that Microsoft is serious about solving the fundamental problems rather than adding artificial intelligence features on top of them. Cautious thumbs up we are looking forward to seeing whether the wider release will keep this ad light default or the promotional content will return to the feature.
